Women’s Basketball Loses To Auburn In OT

The Flyers Lost Their Second Game Of The Weekend

ESTERO, Fla. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team suffered a 76-74 loss in overtime to Auburn in the second game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.  

The Flyers (3-5) dropped their fourth straight game while the Tigers (3-3) get back in the win column.

KEY MOMENT
OT - .02 – Dayton had a chance to win the game, but were unable to make a pair of free throws. That would be the last opportunity for the Flyers.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 15, Auburn 16
  • Dayton scored the opening bucket on a putback by redshirt senior Julia Chandler and Auburn called a timeout 47 seconds into the game.
  • The Flyers pushed the tempo of the game and pulled ahead 8-4 in the first four minutes.
  • Auburn took the lead 12-10 at the 3:21 mark with a three.
  • The Tigers used an 8-0 run over 3:00 to add to their advantage.
  • Redshirt senior Shakeela Fowler scored six straight points for UD.
  • Redshirt junior Erin Whalen hit a big three in the last 30 seconds.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 37, Auburn 24
  • Dayton and Auburn traded buckets back and forth in the early stages of the second.
  • After great ball movement, senior Jayla Scaife drilled a three to put the Flyers back on top 22-20.
  • Chandler had a pair of great rebounds and putbacks to add to UD's lead.
  • At the media, the Flyers held a 26-20 advantage.
  • Auburn on the other hand suffered a six minute drought.
  • The Flyers carried that momentum into the locker room at half.
  • UD shot 47 percent from the floor and outrebounded Auburn 19-10.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 49, Auburn 49
  • Auburn came out of the halftime fired up and went on a 10-2 run to pull back into the game.
  • The Tigers closed the gap to two at 39-37 with 5:30 to play in the quarter.
  • Auburn took the lead, but Dayton quickly responded with a three from Scaife to go back on top.
  • The Flyers trailed before Erin Whalen drilled a three at the buzzer to tie the game up at 49-49.
4th Quarter: Dayton 63, Auburn 63
  • Dayton took the early lead in the fourth on baskets from Fowler, Whitehead, and Scaife.
  • Auburn called a timeout with 6:06 on the clock after a layup in transition with the score at 55-54 in UD's favor.
  • At the media break, Dayton had a 57-56 lead.
  • The game went back-and-forth over the next few minutes.
  • UD led by one going into the final minute, 62-61.
  • Auburn had a chance to take the lead, but Chandler grabbed a crucial rebound and the Tigers were forced to foul.
  • The Tigers scored at the buzzer to force overtime.
Overtime: Dayton 74, Auburn 76
  • Auburn took the lead with a bucket and free throw to start.
  • Whalen answered with a three to tie it and another to take the lead.
  • The Tigers got a three and a layup to pull ahead 72-69 with 2:14 to play.
  • The first nine points for UD in overtime came from Whalen threes.
  • Scaife found Whalen underneath the bucket with a nice pass for a layup, tying the game at 74-74 with 30 seconds left.
  • The Flyers had a chance in the end and missed both free throws as the Tigers took the victory.
