Women’s Basketball Defeats Maine In Gulf Coast Showcase Finale

The Flyers Shot A Season-Best 55 Percent From The Field

ESTERO, Fla. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team powered its way to a 78-49 win over Maine Sunday in the final game of the 2019 Gulf Coast Showcase.

The Flyers (4-5) get back on the winning track while the Bears (2-6) lost their third straight.  

KEY MOMENT
1st – First four minutes – Dayton opened the game on an 11-1 run and never looked back.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 25, Maine 5
  • Dayton jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of free throws following a Maine technical prior to the game and a jumper from redshirt senior Julia Chandler.
  • Chandler scored six straight points for UD, putting the Flyers up 8-1 by the 7:00 mark.
  • Redshirt junior Erin Whalen drilled a three and forced a Maine timeout with 6:05 to play.
  • Maine didn't get its first basket until the 5:38 mark.
  • The Black Bears were forced to call their second timeout of the game at the 2:00 mark as the Flyers were on a 9-0 run and leading 20-3.
  • UD shot 56 percent in the first quarter and held Maine to 14 percent.
  • Whalen led with 12 points while Chandler had 11 points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 40, Maine 23
  • Dayton continued to add to its lead in the early stages of the second.
  • Maeve Carroll scored the first seven points for the Bears and 11 straight for Maine.
  • The Flyers pulled ahead by as much as 23 points, but the Bears were able to cut it to 15 at 34-19 midway through the quarter.
  • UD did not let off the pedal and led by 17 at the half.
  • Whalen's 14 points led the Flyers, going 5-for-7.
  • Dayton shot 52 percent in the half, its best total of the season and held Maine to 34 percent.
  • The Flyers had 21 points from their bench compared to the Bears' two.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 64, Maine 37
  • Dayton and Maine traded three's in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, Whalen hitting again for UD.
  • The Flyers got the margin back up to 19 at 50-31 with 4:22 on the clock.
  • Maine was forced to call a timeout with 2:52 to go after Dayton went on a 10-0 run, going 4-for-4 from the field.
  • The Flyers were 7-of-9 in the final stages of the third and led by 27.
4th Quarter: Dayton 77, Maine 49
  • Dayton carried its momentum over into the fourth and added to its lead by pushing the tempo.
  • By the media break, the Flyers had a 71-42 lead.
  • Maine ran out of time and were unable to mount any type of comeback as Dayton kept the margin above 20.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
1,000 and 500 – Jayla Scaife became the 15th player in Dayton history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career.  
44 – Dayton got 44 points from its bench.
55% – The Flyers shot a season-high 55 percent and held Maine to 37 percent.
19 and 8 – Erin Whalen led UD with 19 points and eight rebounds.
7 – Araion Bradshaw had seven assists in the game. The Flyers had 17 as a team.
