Women’s Basketball Falls Short At Buffalo Tuesday

The Flyers Rallied From A Large First Half Deficit

BUFFALO – The University of Dayton women's basketball team battled back from a 12-point deficit, but was unable to get it done on the road at Buffalo Tuesday, 67-59.

The Flyers (5-6) suffered the loss while the Bulls (8-2) continue their strong season.

KEY MOMENT
4th – 4:38 – There was a 4:38 stretch in the fourth that the Flyers were unable to score while the Bulls pulled away.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, Buffalo 18
  • Dayton and Buffalo traded three's to start the game, but a runner by redshirt senior Shakeela Fowler gave the Flyers a 5-3 lead in the first minute.
  • Redshirt junior Erin Whalen added a jumper to put UD up 7-4.
  • The Bulls responded with a 5-0 run during a 2:20 scoring drought for the Flyers, taking 9-7 lead by the media break. UD had four turnovers during that stretch.
  • Buffalo added to its lead out of the break as Dayton continued to turn the ball over.
  • Back-to-back three's by senior Jayla Scaife and Whalen put UD back on top with just over two minutes to play.
  • The Bulls had the momentum down the stretch and forced another 2:30 scoring drought.
  • Scaife had a team high six points while the Flyers were shooting 60 percent from three.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 28, Buffalo 33
  • Buffalo added to its lead to start the second with a pair of three's, forcing a Dayton timeout at the 8:10 mark.
  • Fowler hit a jumper at the 7:56 mark in the second to end a four-plus minute skid.
  • Midway through the quarter, Dayton closed the gap to five, 24-19.
  • The Flyers were able to force a couple turnovers by the Bulls as well, but were not able to capitalize as well as Buffalo.
  • UD called its second time out of the game at the 1:58 mark to try and slow down UB, who lead by 12.
  • Whalen hit a three on the final possession for the Flyers to cut it to five points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, Buffalo 50
  • Dayton pulled within two right out of the gate with a three from Scaife.
  • Sophomore Kyla Whitehead's free throw at the 7:41 mark tied the game up at 35-35.
  • By the media timeout, Dayton had a 41-40 advantage after a 6-0 run from the Flyers.
  • Buffalo answered and took the lead back 45-43 before a Brittany Ward jumper tied it up once again with under two minutes to play.
  • Giacone drilled a three in the final play of the quarter and cut the gap to two points, 50-48.
4th Quarter: Dayton 59, Buffalo 67
  • Buffalo struck first with four quick points to take a six-point lead.
  • A big three midway through the quarter gave the Bulls a 59-52 advantage as they kept the momentum.
  • Giacone answered and kept UD within striking distance.
  • Dayton suffered from a four minute scoring drought while Buffalo was able to pull away.
  • In the end, the Flyers ran out of time.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
10 – Dayton tied a season best with 10 three-pointers in the game.
22 and 6 – Erin Whalen led the Flyers with 22 points and had six rebounds.
20 and 8 – Jayla Scaife chipped in 20 points and eight rebounds.
30-9 – Dayton outscored Buffalo 30-9 off the bench.
30-14 – Buffalo outscored Dayton 30-14 in the paint.
