Women’s Basketball Ends 2019 With 30-Point Victory

The Flyers Had Seven Players With Eight Or More Points

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team finished up the non-conference season and the 2019 calendar year with a dominating 78-48 win over Coppin State at UD Arena.

The Flyers (7-7) finish a tough non-conference with a .500 record while the Eagles (0-12) are still looking for their first win.

KEY MOMENT
2nd – 4:47 to 2:27 – It was just a four-point Dayton lead before the Flyers went on a run and pulled ahead by 16 over a two-minute stretch.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Coppin State 12
  • Coppin State jumped out a quick start, hitting a pair of threes and a layup in the first minute and a half to take an 8-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Kyla Whitehead hit a pull-up jumper from the free throw line to put the Flyers on the board.
  • Dayton closed the gap to just one at 10-9 midway through the opening quarter.
  • The Flyers took their first lead of the game at the 4:16 mark with a jumper off the inbounds play from redshirt senior Julia Chandler.
  • UD went on a run while CSU suffered from a 3:21 scoring drought, forcing an Eagle timeout with 1:46 to play and the Flyers up 18-10.
  • A buzzer beater layup by Coppin State ended an 0-for-7 stretch for the Eagles.
  • Redshirt junior Erin Whalen led the way with six points on a pair of three pointers
2nd Quarter: Dayton 37, Coppin State 22
  • The Eagles cut the margin down to three with another strong start to the second quarter, going on a 5-0 run in the first two minutes.
  • Dayton called a timeout with 5:57 to go in half and leading 21-17 after failing to box out on the defensive end and giving up 12 points off eight turnovers in just 14 minutes of action.
  • The Flyers started to heat up from the three-point line, getting a couple of big baskets from redshirt senior Shakeela Fowler, Whalen, and redshirt junior Araion Bradshaw.
  • A 12-0 Flyer run and 4:22 Eagle drought forced the second timeout of the game for Coppin State with 2:27 to go.
  • Senior Christine Szabo deep three in the corner at the buzzer to put the Flyers up 16 at the break.
  • The Flyers shot 53.8 percent in the first half while the Eagles shot 36.0 percent.
  • Whalen had a team-high 11 points while Fowler had eight points, four assists, and a career-high five steals.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 55, Coppin State 38
  • Dayton added to its lead coming out of the locker room, pulling ahead by 21 points with 6:45 on the clock.
  • At the media break, Dayton led 50-29 with 4:51 to go in the third.
  • Both teams shot over 50 percent from three up to this point in the contest.
  • Dayton started to have some foul issues, recording its fifth team foul with 1:31 on the clock.
  • The Flyers only outscored the Eagles 17-16 in the quarter as they were unable to extend their advantage.
4th Quarter: Dayton 78, Coppin State 48
  • Bradshaw opened the fourth with a nice contested bucket and a foul as UD looked to get momentum back.
  • UD went on a 7-0 run to start the quarter, forcing CSU's third timeout with 8:12 to play and the Flyers up 62-38.
  • Halfway through the quarter, Dayton was up 22 points, 65-43.
  • Coppin State on the other hand suffered from a 4:00 field goal drought, only getting points from the free throw line.
  • Szabo and sophomore Ella Skeens had big games off the bench, both recording season-high point totals.
  • The Flyers controlled the remainder of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
12 – Dayton made 12 three-pointers in the game, the most in a game this season.
51.8% - The Flyers shot 51.8 percent from the field and held the Eagles to 35.6 percent.
20 – Erin Whalen had her third 20+ point game of the season with a game-high 20 points and four threes.
6 – With five steals in the first half alone and six total, Shakeela Fowler set a new career-high for a game. That also went with 12 points and five assists.
9, 8, 6 – Araion Bradshaw chipped eight points, six rebounds, and tied a career-high with nine assists.
21 – The 21 team assists tied a season-high.
12 – UD had 12 steals, which is a season-high.
8 – Seven players or more scored at least eight points for Dayton.
