Women’s Basketball Crushes La Salle in A-10 Opener

The Flyers Scored A Season-High 98 Points

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened the Atlantic 10 slate with a 98-48 win over La Salle on the road Saturday.

The Flyers (8-7, 1-0 A-10) earn their first conference win while the Explorers (6-8, 0-1 A-10) lose their seventh straight contest.

KEY MOMENT
1st – Dayton outscored La Salle 31-11 in the opening quarter and never looked back.  

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 31, La Salle 11
  • Dayton jumped out to an early 8-3 lead thanks to four points each from redshirt senior Shakeela Fowler and sophomore Kyla Whitehead.
  • Between the two players, they scored the first 12 points for UD.
  • La Salle was forced to call at timeout with 4:35 to play after a Fowler three put Dayton up 19-8.
  • The Explorers were held almost three full minutes without a point.
  • The Flyers pushed their lead to 20 at 31-11 in the final 40 seconds of the opening quarter on a Whitehead layup off a Jenna Giacone dish.
  • UD shot 70 percent in the first quarter and 60 percent from three.
  • The 31 was the most points in a quarter for the Flyers this season.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 47, La Salle 33
  • The Flyers added to their lead with a steal, driving layup, and the foul by redshirt junior Araion Bradshaw.
  • By the media break, Dayton had a 41-19 advantage over La Salle.
  • The Explorers called their second timeout with 3:23 on the clock as the Flyers got an easy putback from redshirt senior Brittany Ward.
  • Fouls were the only thing keeping La Salle in the game as they were 10-2 in favor of the Explorers at one point.
  • Heading into the locker rooms at the half, the Flyers had just a 14-point lead after leading by as much as 25.
  • Fowler had a team-high 11 points while Whithead added 10 points. Bradshaw chipped in five points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
  • UD shot 51.4 percent in the first half while holding LU to 37.0 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 67, La Salle 45
  • Dayton and La Salle traded baskets in the opening few minutes of the second half.
  • The Flyers got the lead back up to 21 at 58-37 thanks to a fast-paced tempo.
  • Midway through the quarter, Dayton was up 61-41.
  • The Flyers got into the bonus with just under three minutes to play in the third, benefitting a team shooting 71 percent in the game.
  • The Finished of the third strong and got the margin to 22.
4th Quarter: Dayton 98, La Salle 58
  • Senior Christine Szabo hit a pair of three's in the beginning of the fourth to spark the Flyers and the bench once again.
  • La Salle's leading rebounder Shalina Miller fouled out with 6:15 to go in the game.
  • Dayton got the margin to 31 at 81-50 with just over six to play.
  • At the media break, UD had an 85-52 lead thanks to an and-1 by freshman Mariah Perez.
  • The Flyers never let off the gas and got the gap to 40 points by the end.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
31 – The 31 points in the first quarter and fourth quarter were the most for the Flyers in a quarter this season and most since Jan. 10, 2018 against St. Bonaventure. The last game that Dayton had two 31+ quarters in a contest was the record-setting 116-point performance against Rhode Island in 2018.
90+ - This marks the second game in the past three that the Flyers have scored 90 or more points.
10+ - Five Flyers had 10 or more points in the game.
18 – Kyla Whitehead led UD with a career-high 18 points in the game, going 6-for-7.
16 – Shakeela Fowler tied her career high with 16 points.
11 – Christine Szabo had a career-high 11 points and has 19 points in the past two games in 22 minutes of action.  
56.9 – Dayton shot 56.9 percent in the game and went 11-of-21 from three.

KEY STAT
25 – The Flyers had a season-high 25 assists in the contest.
