Volleyball Squaring Off Against No. 16 Marquette Friday In NCAA First Round

Flyers and Golden Eagles To Play At Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Dayton volleyball team will be making the program's 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament Friday when it takes on 16th-ranked Marquette. The first-round match between the Flyers and Golden Eagles is set to get underway at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Purdue's Holloway Gymnasium.

About Dayton
Dayton (22-8) is making its second-consecutive and 14th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2019. The Flyers earned the Atlantic 10 Conference's automatic bid after claiming their league-record 13th A-10 Championship title, a 3-1 win over top-seeded VCU on November 24. UD's offense is led by 2019 A-10 Player of the Year sophomore Jamie Peterson with 4.60 kills/set (1st A-10, 17th NCAA) and 5.43 points/set (1st A-10, 8th NCAA). Defensively, junior Olivia Dubay averages 1.14 blocks/set (3rd A-10) and sophomore Maura Collins gets under a team-best 4.36 digs/set (3rd A-10). 2019 A-10 Rookie of the Year Amelia Moore averages 1.78 kills/set and 1.06 blocks/set for the Flyers.

Scouting Marquette
Marquette (27-5) was upset by St. John's, 3-1, in the BIG EAST Championship title match but earned an at-large bid into the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles are making their ninth-consecutive appearance the tourney after advancing to the regional semifinal round in 2018. Allie Barber leads the team with 4.67 kills/set (15th NCAA) and her 537 total kills leads the BIG EAST while Hope Werch serves up 0.50 aces/set (12th NCAA).

RPI Rankings
In the NCAA's most recent Rating Percentage Index (RPI), released Dec. 1, Dayton ranked 42nd according to NCAA.com. Marquette came in at 13th.

Series Stuff
Dayton leads, 21-7
In a series that dates back to 1978, Dayton holds a 21-7 advantage over Marquette but the Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings between the two. Most recently, Dayton and Marquette squared off on Aug. 29, 2015 at the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational with the Golden Eagles picking up a 3-0 win over the Flyers in Ames, Iowa.

Flyer Facts
• Tim Horsmon is in his 11th season overall, and sixth since 2007, as head coach of the Flyers in 2019. His record at Dayton is 283-81 and his career win-loss mark sits at 459-245 in 21 seasons as a head coach. Horsmon is the program's second-winningest coach behind only R. Elaine Dreidame who amassed 310 wins 1970-79.
• Over the last 11 seasons (2009-2019), the Flyers have recorded a 143-13 (.917) mark in regular season Atlantic 10 Conference play, including a perfect 14-0 mark in 2016, 2015 and 2012 and a 15-0 record in 2010. UD suffered only one conference loss in 2019, 2017, 2014, 2011 and 2009.
• Dayton made its 20th-consecutive and 23rd overall appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2019. The Flyers have reached conference post-season play every year they have been a member of the A-10 except 1995 and 1999. UD holds a 29-10 record in league tournaments.
• Dayton has won the Atlantic 10 Regular Season title 13 times (2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2001, 1998). The Flyers have won the A-10 Championship title a league-record 13 times (2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003). UD is making its six-consecutive and 16th overall appearance in the championship title game.
• In the program's 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, Dayton has reached the Second Round seven times and the Flyers hold a 7-13 all-time record in NCAA tourney matches.
• With two wins at the 2014 Bowling Green Hampton Inn Invitational, Dayton surpassed the 1,000-win mark as a program to become just the 13th NCAA DI team to attain that level of success. The Flyers currently rank 13th all-time in the Division I record book with an overall program tally of 1,153-598 (.659) over 50 seasons (1970).
• The Flyers finished the 2019 regular season with a 20-8 overall record and a 13-1 Atlantic 10 mark, finishing in second place in regular-season league play. 2019 is the program's 41st winning season and its 32nd 20-win season.
