RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fell on the road to Atlantic 10 leaders VCU, 64-62, Thursday.
The Flyers (12-10, 7-4 A-10) and the Rams (19-6, 11-1 A-10) squared off in a battle between two of the top defenses in the Atlantic 10.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1STÂ Quarter: Dayton 11, VCU 7
- Dayton opened up the game with a three from senior Lauren Cannatelli.
- The Flyers were keyed in defensively, holding the Rams scoreless until the 7:10 mark.
- At the 6:28 mark, Cannatelli made her 240th career three pointer, breaking the all-time school record, passing former Flyer Andrea Hoover.
- By the media break, UD had an 8-4 advantage over VCU.
- The Rams fought back and closed the gap to 8-7 by the three minute mark while the Flyers faced a four minute scoring drought.
- Senior Maddy Dennis broke the skid with a three pointer to put the Flyers up four.
- The Flyers shot 27.3 percent in the first 10 minutes while holding the Rams to 18.2 percent from the field.
- Cannatelli led the way with six points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 28, VCU 22
- Dayton pushed its advantage to 15-7 over the first 2:30 of the second quarter.
- The Rams were held scoreless in the beginning of the period until the 5:32 mark.
- VCU responded though with a 4-0 run to make it 16-11 midway through the second.
- Junior Jenna Giacone broke a five minute field goal drought with a pull up jumper, putting UD up 20-11.
- Freshman Kyla Whitehead contributed back-to-back baskets including a three to add to the advantage.
- Junior Jayla Scaife hit a three in the final minute of the quarter to make it a double-digit lead.
- The Flyers shot 34.8 percent in the first half while holding the Rams to 29.2 percent.
- Scaife led UD with nine points and four rebounds while Cannatelli added seven points.
- Dayton was 5-of-12 from three with VCU going 0-for-5.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, VCU 39
- Dayton was the team that got off to a slow start in the third, unable to score until the 6:46 with a drive, bucket, and free throw from redshirt sophomore Araion Bradshaw.
- Redshirt junior Shakeela Fowler then followed suit with the same play with 5:39 to play.
- Midway through the quarter, Dayton led 34-29.
- A couple of free throws by Fowler gave the Flyers a double-digit lead once again 42-31.
- UD kept the margin at double-figures over the next few minutes.
- The Flyers outscored the Rams 20-17 in the quarter.
- Scaife and Cannatelli both reached double digits scoring in the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 62, VCU 64
- The host Rams came out firing in the fourth and made it a three-point game by the 7:30 mark.
- Dayton called a timeout to try and slow the VCU rally.
- The Rams managed to tie the game up at 53-53 with 6:28 to play. During that stretch, the Flyers had no field goals for 4:18.
- At the media timeout, UD held a narrow 55-53 advantage.
- The Rams took its first lead of the game with 3:18 to play.
- The game went back and forth over the final two minutes of action.
- Both teams had chances to win it in the final 30 seconds, but VCU was able to get the gamewinner with just four seconds remaining.
