#UDBASE Blasts Four Home Runs In 17-4 Win Over Fordham

Dayton Remains One Game Behind VCU For A Share Of The Conference Title

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team started off its series with Fordham strong with a 17-4 win on Thursday afternoon. Dayton maintains its spot in second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings and improves its record to 29-22-1 (16-6 A-10), while Fordham drops to 32-22 (13-9 A-10) on the year.
 
KEY MOMENT
Dayton scored nine runs in the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Alex Brickman's three-run home run to make the score 6-0 was the first of four longballs on the day for the Flyers.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
Bottom 3: Dayton 9, Fordham 0
Connor Wilson and Takahiro Yamada both walked to reach base, then Michael Cleary put Dayton on the board with a single through the right side. Connor Echols walked to load the bases and Riley Tirotta reached on an error the next at-bat to send Yamada and Cleary home to put the Flyers up 3-0. Alex Brickman launched a three-run home run to double the lead, but the Flyers weren't done yet, as Jay Curtis and Marcos Pujols hit back-to-back singles and were followed by a Connor Wilson triple. Wilson came across on an error the next at-bat for the ninth run of the frame.

Connor Echols led off the inning with a double and advanced on a passed ball before scoring on a play that saw Jay Curtis reach via error.
 
Top 5: Dayton 10, Fordham 1
Jason Coules triples to open the fifth and was brought home on a Billy Godrick groundout to second base.

CJ Vazquez and Alvin Melendez opened the sixth with a back-to-back hits to put a pair of runners in scoring position and Vazquez came across on a Jake MacKenzie sacrifice fly, while Melendez scored on a wild pitch

Three consecutive singles from Benjamin Blackwell, Connor Echols and Riley Tirotta loaded the bases with no outs for Dayton and the first Flyer run of the inning came on an Alex Brickman sac fly. Jay Curtis then cleared the bases with a three-run home run and Marcos Pujols made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot to dead center. Connor Wilson singled through the right side and Takahiro Yamada hit the third UD home run of the inning with a bomb to left field.

  • Hunter Wolfe picked up his league-high ninth win on the mound with a strong 7.0-inning effort, allowing seven hits, three earned and striking out five with no walks.
  • Wolfe's fifth strikeout of the day was No. 430 for Dayton pitchers on the mound this season, setting a new program record for strikeouts in a single season for the pitching staff.
  • Alex Brickman (6th), Jay Curtis (3rd), Marcos Pujols (2nd) and Takahiro Yamada (1st) all left the yard with home runs on the day.
  • Brickman's home run was his sixth, which ties Eddie Pursinger for a team high mark.
  • Brickman also had a team-high four RBI, while Curtis and Yamada had three apiece.
  • Connor Echols was a perfect 3-for-3 for a team-high three base hits.
