Box Score DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's tennis team hosted the UD Hidden Duals this week and kicked off the 2019 fall season with several strong showings. Dayton split the top six singles courts and won two of the top three doubles courts in all three matches of the weekend against Northern Kentucky, Wright State and Xavier.

The highlight of the whole tournament came from sophomore Joe DeMarco on Sunday, as DeMarco defeated Xavier's Srdan Pejic at the No. 2 spot in the singles lineup. DeMarco dropped the first set by a score of 6-2, but fought back to even up the score at a set apiece with a 6-4 victory in the second set to set up what would become an epic finish in a superset tiebreak. Pejic had several opportunities to put the match on ice, but DeMarco was able to save eight different match points to come away with a 19-17 win in the tiebreak.

Other high points from the matches versus Xavier include straight-set singles victories from Georgi Mavrodiev and Steven Karl on courts four and six, respectively. The Flyers also took two of the top three doubles courts from the Musketeers, as Mavrodiev and Karl cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 1, while Joe and Matt DeMarco earned the victory at No. 2 by a 6-3 margin.

Dayton's freshmen class also showed it is prepared for competition at the collegiate level, as Mavrodiev was a perfect 3-0 for the weekend in singles play and fellow first year Oliver Dunne went 2-1 in singles play, with the only loss coming at the No. 3 spot in the singles lineup against Xavier. Singles matches weren't the only area where freshmen made an impact over the weekend with Matt DeMarco teaming up with his brother, Joe, to earn a 2-1 mark in doubles play.
