Women’s Basketball’s Defense Powers Flyers to 65-51 Road Win

Dayton Forced 24 Turnovers From Richmond

RICHMOND, Va.– The University of Dayton women's basketball team forced 24 turnovers and earned a 14-point victory over Richmond Sunday afternoon on the road.
 
The Flyers (10-7, 3-0 A-10) stay unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play while the Spiders (7-10, 0-3 A-10) are trending in the other direction.
 
KEY MOMENT
2nd – 9:38 to 3:56 – Dayton turned a seven-point deficit into a seven-point lead during the stretch and led the rest of the way.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Richmond 18
  • Dayton opened the scoring the first 20 seconds with a three by redshirt junior Erin Whalen.
  • The Flyers went on a 7-0 run over 1:54 leading into the media timeout. UD held a 10-4 advantage.
  • Richmond hit a three in transition at the 2:36 mark to take a 12-10 lead over Dayton.
  • The Spiders answered after the media break with a 13-2 run over their own over 3:23.
  • Whalen led UD with five points in the quarter.
  • Rebounds were 12-6 in favor of Richmond in the opening 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 35, Richmond 28
  • The Flyers got a pair of and-ones in the first minute of the second from Whalen and redshirt senior Shakeela Fowler.
  • Senior Jayla Scaife hit a jumper in transition to put Dayton back on top at the 7:55 mark, 22-21. It was UD's first lead since 10-9 in the first and capped off an 8-0 run over 2:21.
  • Richmond called a timeout with 7:02 to play to try and slow Dayton down.
  • Midway through the quarter, Richmond had only scored three points, which came in the first minute.
  • Redshirt junior Araion Bradshaw added an and-one of her own to put UD up 28-21.
  • The Spiders hit a three with just 20 seconds left to pull within double digits of the Flyers. All three of Richmond's made field goals in the second were threes.
  • Dayton shot 40.6 percent in the first 20 minutes compared to Richmond's 40.0 percent.
  • The Flyers forced 13 turnovers and had 16-10 points in the paint advantage.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 54, Richmond 44
  • Fowler scored the first four points for Dayton in the second half.
  • The Flyers and Spiders traded buckets in the first four minutes of the quarter with the margin staying at seven in favor of UD.
  •  By the media break, Dayton led 44-37.
  • After the timeout, Richmond was called for a foul and a technical, giving Dayton four free throw attempts. The Flyers converted to lead by 10.
  • Both teams struggled to hit field goals, both going over three minutes without one.
  • The Flyers kept the gap at double-figures going into the final 10 minutes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 65, Richmond 51
  • Senior Brittany Ward hit a three to start the fourth, giving the Flyers a 13-point advantage after a minute and a half.
  • Fowler became the third Flyer to reach double-digit scoring joining Whalen and Scaife.
  • Richmond called a timeout with 6:27 to play, forcing the final media. UD had a 61-46 lead.
  • The Spiders only had two points up until the 5:36 mark in the quarter.
  • Dayton kept the momentum in its favor the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
36 – Dayton shot 36 percent in the game while Richmond shot 35 percent.
94 – The Flyers were 94 percent from the free throw line, going 16-of-17. The Spiders on the other hand were 56 percent.
24 – UD had a 24-18 points in the paint advantage.
