Women's Basketball Opens A-10 Play Saturday At La Salle

The Flyers Are 7-7 On The Season After The Non-Conference Slate

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team opens Atlantic 10 play Saturday in Philadelphia at La Salle for a 2 p.m. tipoff.

SCOUTING DAYTON
Dayton finished non-conference play with a 7-7 record overall, after facing a difficult slate. The Flyers are 2-2 on the road, but on a two-game winning streak.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018.

As a team, the Flyers are scoring 67.4 points per game and giving up 64.0 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 37.8 percent overall, 33.6 percent from three, and 71.0 percent from the free throw line. UD has a +3.9 rebounding margin and +1.3 turnover margin.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Erin Whalen, who is averaging 14.4 points and shooting 37.1 percent from three. Senior Jayla Scaife is adding 11.8 points and 5.2 rebounds as well.

SCOUTING LA SALLE
La Salle heads into the conference season with a 6-7 record on the year and 2-4 home mark. The Explorers got off to a strong start, but are currently on a six-game losing streak.

Head coach Mountain Macgillivray is in his second season at La Salle, coming over from Quinnipiac.

This season, La Salle is averaging 61.9 points each outing and allowing 64.5 points to opposing teams. The Explorers are shooting 35.9 percent from the floor, 32.4 percent from behind the arc, and 67.9 percent from the charity stripe. La Salle faces negative rebounding and turnover margins.

Leading the Explorers is Claire Jacobs with 11.6 points each contest while Shalina Miller leads the team with 8.0 rebounds to go with 5.7 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned a 78-48 win over Coppin State on New Year's Eve to finish up the non-conference season. The Flyers hit a season-high 12 three pointers while Whalen had 20 points.

La Salle lost 72-69 against Temple at home Monday. A tough second quarter (25-10) doomed the Explorers in the contest. Claire Jacobs had a team-high 19 points.

THE SERIES
Dayton and La Salle have played 48 times with the Flyers winning 22 times and the Explorers winning 16 times. The last meeting took place in the A-10 Tournament opening round on March 5 at Dayton with the Flyers winning 65-38.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers rank 22nd in the country in rebounds as well as 36th in free throws made and 41st in three point field goals made. Individually, Erin Whalen ranks 51st in three point field goals made.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 99 of its last 124 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.817), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 582 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

WE'VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Dec. 5, 2019, the Flyers played in front of 10,554 fans at UD Arena while hosting Morehead State. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD's annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers. It was the fourth largest crowd for a NCAA women's game this year and biggest in program history. With a home attendance average of 2,605, Dayton ranked 48th out of 349 DI programs last season.

FRESHMAN DUO TO MISS 2019-20 SEASON
Dayton freshmen Nadjy Tyler and Destiny Bohanon will redshirt for the 2019-20 season due to injuries in the preseason.

DAYTON ADDS AUBURN TRANSFER PERRY
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Maliya Perry was high school teammates with current Flyer Kyla Whitehead at Pickerington Central High School. There she was the No. 98 ranked prospect by Prospects Nation and the No. 28 ranked guard nationally by ESPN HoopGurlz. Perry guided her high school to a state championship in 2018 and runner-up finish in 2019. She earned Columbus Dispatch All-Metro team honors. Perry is a 6-0 forward who played in three games at Auburn this season before transferring. She shot 50 percent from the field and was perfect from three-point range. She enrolled at Dayton for the spring semester 7of 2020.
