Women’s Basketball Stays Unbeaten In A-10 With Road Victory

The Flyers Have Won Eight In A Row

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team went to George Washington and earned a 66-50 victory Wednesday night.
 
The Flyers (13-7, 6-0 A-10) get their eighth straight win while the Colonials (7-11, 1-4 A-10) lose their eighth of the last nine games.
 
KEY MOMENT
1st – Dayton outscored George Washington 17-8 in the opening quarter and outrebounded the Colonials 15-4 including nine rebounds.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 17, George Washington 8
  • Dayton struck first with a three by redshirt junior Erin Whalen to put the Flyers up early.
  • The Flyers pushed the pace and took a 12-3 lead midway through the quarter thanks to a three and jumper by senior Jayla Scaife and a pair of putback by sophomore Kyla Whitehead.
  • The Colonials suffered from a 4:30 drought during that time.
  • UD got the margin to 12 at 17-5 going into the final minute of the quarter.
  • Dayton outrebounded GW in the quarter 15-4 and had nine offensive rebounds for nine second chance points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, George Washington 21
  • The Flyers went cold to start the third and weren't able to counter a 4:30 scoring drought while the Colonials went on a 5-0 run of their own.
  • Whitehead ended the skid with a contested layup at the 7:32 mark.
  • By the media break, the Flyers led by nine once again, 23-14.
  • The teams traded buckets over the next several minutes with neither team willing to budge.
  • Scaife became the first Flyer in double figures with 10 points and just over a minute to play.
  • GW cut it to eight as the teams went into the locker room.
  • At the half, UD had a 23-10 rebounding advantage, 13 offensive rebounds, and 11 second chance points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 50, George Washington 31
  • UD got the lead back to double digits to start the third with a pair of threes from Whalen, making it 35-21. She added a layup off the dish by redshirt junior Araion Bradshaw to score the first eight points of the second half.
  • The Flyers opened the third on a 10-0 run over 4:01.
  • By the media timeout, Dayton held a 42-22 lead thanks to a stellar defensive five minutes.
  • Whalen became the second Flyer to reach double digit points. She had 11 points in the third quarter alone.
  • GW didn't get its first field goal of the third until the 3:35 mark.
  • The Colonials mounted a comeback and made it a 14-point game, forcing a Flyer timeout with 1:59 to go.
  • UD got it back to 19 before the end of the third.
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, George Washington 50
  • The pace of the game slowed in the beginning of the fourth with fatigue setting in for both teams.
  • The Colonials did manage to narrow the gap to 15 with 6:10 on the clock.
  • Midway through the quarter though, the Flyers answered and got the margin back to 19 at 60-41.
  • Scaife went over the 20-point mark for the first time since Dec. 17 against Buffalo.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
46% - Dayton shot 46 percent including 70 percent in the third quarter alone while holding GW to 37.2 percent.
20 and 8 – Jayla Scaife had a game-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds.
40-18 – The Flyers had 40 rebounds in the game and held the Colonials to just 18 rebounds, a season-best performance.
21-6 – Dayton benefited from 21 second chance points compared to George Washington's six points.
14 – Erin Whalen had a double digit scoring game as well with 14 points, going 4-of-8 from three.
 
KEY STAT
21 – Dayton had 21 second chance points and a +22 rebounding margin.
