Women's Basketball Travels To Saint Joseph's Sunday

The First Place Flyers Take Streak To Philadelphia

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team returns to action after bye week to travel to Saint Joseph's Sunday for a 2 p.m. Atlantic 10 contest.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is 14-7 overall this year and currently on a nine-game winning streak. The Flyers are 7-0 in A-10 play and 5-2 in away games this season.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018. She recently earned her 100th career victory.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 65.8 points per game and holding opponents to 59.1 points to opposing teams. Dayton is shooting 38.1 percent overall, 34.3 percent from three, and 71.7 percent from the free throw line. UD also has a +3.7 rebounding margin and +1.9 turnover margin.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Erin Whalen with 13.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and senior Jayla Scaife, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, with 12.3 points and 5.2 boards each outing.

SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
Saint Joseph's hosts Dayton with a 8-12 record on the year and 2-6 conference mark. The Hawks have lost their last two games and are 5-5 at home this year.

Head coach Cindy Griffin is in her 19th season at her alma mater and boasts 329 career wins at Saint Joseph's.

This season, Saint Joseph's is scoring 55.1 points per game and giving up 55.5 to opponents. The Hawks are shooting 38.2 percent from the field, 25.9 percent from behind the arc, and 70.5 percent from the charity stripe.

Leading the Hawks is Katie Jekot with 10.2 points and 2.5 assists each contest while Claire Melia is chipping in 10.1 points and 5.5 boards.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton held on for a 48-44 victory over Fordham at home last Sunday to continue the Flyers winning streak. Jayla Scaife had a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Saint Joseph's suffered a tough 56-50 loss to George Washington at home on Wednesday after scoring just five points in the second quarter. The Hawks were led by Nailah Delinois' 14 points in the contest.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Saint Joseph's have played 31 times previously with the Flyers winning 18 times compared to the Hawks' 13 victories. Dayton has won seven games in a row and in last year's meeting, UD came out on top 72-65 in overtime.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers rank 32nd in the country in rebounds and 55th in free throws made. Individually, Shakeela Fowler ranks 35th in the nation in free throw percentage and leads the A-10.

SCAIFE NAMED A-10 POW
Senior forward Jayla Scaife earned her first A-10 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 27 after averaging 20.5 points an 9.0 rebounds in Dayton's two wins over George Washington and Fordham.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
In Coach Green's four year tenure at UD, the Flyers are 27-2 in the month of January including perfect in 2016-17, 2017-18, and so far in 2019-20.

FLYERS BY 40
Dayton defeated La Salle on Jan. 4, 2020 in the A-10 opener 98-58, the first 40-point win for the Flyers since defeating La Salle on Feb. 22, 2015, 91-49, at home. Dayton scored 94+ points in two of three straight games.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 106 of its last 131 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.800), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

WE'VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Dec. 5, 2019, the Flyers played in front of 10,554 fans at UD Arena while hosting Morehead State. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD's annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers. It was the fourth largest crowd for a NCAA women's game this year and biggest in program history. With a home attendance average of 2,605, Dayton ranked 48th out of 349 DI programs last season.
