Women’s Basketball Wins It Late At UMass

The Flyers Won Their 13th In A Row

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team took the lead with eight seconds left and held strong defensively to win its 13th contest in a row.
The Dayton Flyers (18-7, 11-0 A-10) continue to add to their Atlantic 10-leading record while the Minutewomen (16-9, 6-6 A-10) drop a game.
 
KEY MOMENT
4th quarter – There were multiple moments in the final two minutes that proved to be key moments, but the final defensive stands with eight seconds held on for the win.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 7, UMass 11
  • Both teams got off to slow starts offensively with each team getting a one bucket in the first three minutes.
  • UD led just 5-4 by the media timeout as both teams were shooting 28.6 percent for the game.
  • The next two minutes saw neither team score as the drought continued.
  • After 10 minutes and a buzzer beater from 30 feet out by UMass, the Flyers trailed 11-7.
  • Sophomore Kyla Whitehead led UD with five points.
  • Dayton shot 23.1 percent in the opening quarter compared to UMass' 31.3 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 23, UMass 20
  • Dayton opened the second with a bucket and a foul from senior Brittany Ward.
  • Back-to-back threes by redshirt juniors Erin Whalen and Araion Bradshaw gave Dayton a 15-14 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the quarter.
  • By the media break, the Flyers had a six point game at 22-14 after the Minutewomen were forced to call a timeout to try and stop a 13-0 UD run.
  • UMass' five-plus minute drought ended with a free throw with 3:35 on the clock.
  • The Minutewomen surged back down the stretch and the Flyers led by just three.
  • Bradshaw had a team-high seven points while Whitehead had five points and five boards.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 34, UMass 35
  • The Flyers got their first four points of the second half from the free throw line to get the margin back to five with 7:00 on the clock.
  • Halfway through the third, Dayton led UMass 29-25.
  • The Minutewomen came out and hit a three to make it a one-point game and under four to play. Another three put UMass back up 31-29.
  • Jenna Giacone drilled a three from the corner give the Flyers a one-point lead heading into the final two minutes.
  • UMass had the last answer though and led by one with 10 minutes to go.
4th Quarter: Dayton 52, UMass 51
  • The Minutewomen scored four quick points in the first 50 seconds, forcing a Flyer timeout as they led by five.
  • Whitehead then scored the next four in the paint to counter. Whalen then followed up with a three to give UD a 41-39 lead with 7:04 to go. UMass called its second timeout.
  • With 4:04 on the clock, redshirt senior Julia Chandler had a putback and a free throw after drawing the foul to take the 48-46 lead.
  • UMass had two chances between the two minute and one minute mark, but both possessions ended in Dayton steals.
  • Chandler had another clutch putback as the shot clock expired with :47 to play and Dayton up four.
  • UMass got a basket and a foul, missed the free throw, got the rebound, putback and another foul to take a 51-50 lead with :37 to play.
  • Scaife then hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left, giving UD a one-point lead.
  • The defense held off and earned the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
11 and 6 – Kyla Whitehead led UD with 11 points and six rebounds.
10 and 11 – Julia Chandler had her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
33.3% - Dayton shot 33.3 percent overall in the game.
37 – The Flyers totaled 37 rebounds.
13 on 19 – Dayton had 13 assists on 19 made field goals in the contest.
 
KEY STAT
75% to 54% - Dayton went 9-of-12 from the free throw line while UMass missed five including key ones down the stretch.

  • The Flyers return home to host VCU Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
  • It will be Senior Day with the six Dayton seniors being honored after the game.
