Women’s Basketball Holds Off VCU To Move To 12-0 In A-10 Play

Dayton Has Now Won 14 Straight Games

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team remained undefeated in conference play with a 72-67 victory over the VCU Rams.
 
Dayton (19-7, 12-0 A-10) won its 14th consecutive game while VCU (14-11, 9-3 A-10) lost its third game in five contests.
 
KEY MOMENT
3rd quarter – Shakeela Fowler made a long three at the buzzer to give the Flyers a 48-39 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 21, VCU 8
  • Araion Bradshaw opened the scoring with a jumper.
  • After VCU tied the game at two, Dayton scored five consecutive points to take a 7-2 lead.
  • At the end of the quarter, the Flyers went on a 7-0 run over 2:32 to take a 21-8 lead.
  • Six different Flyers scored in the quarter, as Erin Whalen and Jayla Scaife each scored five points to lead the Flyers in the quarter.
  • Dayton shot 7-of-13 from the field (54 percent) in the quarter while VCU only shot 4-of-19 (22 percent).
  • The Flyers outrebounded the Rams, 13-7.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 35, VCU 23
  • VCU cut the deficit to 23-14 in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Flyers had a nearly three-minute scoreless drought during that time. 
  • The Flyers quickly responded, scoring five straight points in just 32 seconds to take a 28-14 lead.
  • Erin Whalen hit back-to-back threes to give her 54 on the season, extending her team lead. 
  • Whalen scored 10 points in the quarter and 15 in the 1st half to lead the Flyers.
  • VCU made their last three baskets of the quarter.
  • Dayton scored eight fast break points in the half while not allowing a fast break point for VCU.
  • Kyla Whitehead grabbed five rebounds in the half to lead the Flyers.
  • Shakeela Fowler dished out four assists during the half.
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, VCU 39
  • VCU went on a 9-3 run to open the quarter, cutting the Flyer lead to 38-32.
  • The Rams closed the gap to three at the 2:34 mark, the closest margin since the 6:15 mark of the first quarter.
  • Dayton made three straight free throws to extend the lead back to 45-39.
  • Shakeela Fowler beat the buzzer with a three to extend the lead to 48-39. 
  • VCU was held scoreless for the last 2:34 of the quarter.
  • Both teams struggled a bit from the floor in the quarter. VCU shot 5-for-15 (33.3 percent) while Dayton shot 3-for-11 (27.3 percent).
4th Quarter: Dayton 72, VCU 67
  • Shakeela Fowler made the first basket of the quarter to push the lead to double-digits, 50-39.
  • VCU then went on a 9-2 run over 2:19 to cut the lead to 52-48. 
  • Dayton held a 56-50 lead at the final media timeout after Jayla Scaife made a jumper with 4:45 left.
  • VCU scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 56-54, the closest point of the game since early in the first quarter.
  • Dayton then went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead back to 62-54. All six points came at the foul line.
  • VCU came within three points three different times with under a minute left. 
  • The Flyers shot 18-of-21 from the free-throw line in the quarter. Bradshaw contributed eight of the 18 made free throws. 
  • Jayla Scaife grabbed five of her seven rebounds during the half.
