Women's Basketball Continues A-10 Play With George Washington Wednesday

The Flyers Are 12-0 And In First Place In The Atlantic 10

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosts George Washington in the second game of the series on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is 19-7 on the season and 12-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Flyers are on a 14-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 21 and are 9-2 at home this year.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018. She recently earned her 100th career victory.

As a team, the Flyers are scoring 65.0 points per game and allowing just 58.2 points to opponents. Dayton is shooting 38.1 percent overall, 33.5 percent from three, and 71.9 percent from the free throw line. UD has a +2.2 turnover margin and +2.3 rebounding margin.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Erin Whalen with 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while senior Jayla Scaife is adding 12.6 points and 5.3 boards each outing as well.

SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington comes to Dayton with a 11-14 record on the year and a 5-7 conference mark. The Colonials are 6-7 in road games and have won two of their last three games.

Head coach Jennifer Rizzotti is in her fourth season at GW and has 376 wins in her 21 year career.

This season, GW is averaging 55.8 points each outing and giving up 60.8 points to opposing squads. The Colonials are shooting 39.3 percent  from the field, 30.8 percent from behind the arc, and 63.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Leading the Colonials is Alexandra Maund with 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Tori Hyduke is chipping in 9.2 points as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton kept its streak alive with a 72-67 victory over second-place VCU on Sunday at home on ESPNU. The Flyers scored their last 16 points from the free throw line and held on for the win.

George Washington earned a 62-57 win over George Mason at home on Saturday. The Colonials exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter and were led by Alexandra Maund with 16 points and eight rebounds.

THE SERIES
Dayton and George Washington have played 46 times previously with the Colonials leading the series with a 33-13 advantage. The Flyers won the meeting earlier this season in D.C. 66-50 and have won three in a row against them at UD Arena.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers ranke 43rd in the country in free throws made and 51st in scoring defense. Individually, Shakeela Fowler ranks 29th in free throw percentage and second in the A-10.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
In Coach Green's four year tenure at UD, the Flyers are 28-2 in the month of January including perfect marks in 2016-17, 2017-18, and this season as well.

FLYERS BY 40
Dayton defeated La Salle on Jan. 4, 2020 in the A-10 opener 98-58, the first 40-point win for the Flyers since defeating La Salle on Feb. 22, 2015, 91-49, at home. Dayton scored 94+ points in two of three straight games.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 111 of its last 136 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.812), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

WE'VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Dec. 5, 2019, the Flyers played in front of 10,554 fans at UD Arena while hosting Morehead State. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD's annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers. It was the fourth largest crowd for a NCAA women's game this year and biggest in program history. With a home attendance average of 3,019, Dayton ranks 42nd currently out of 351 Division I programs and leads the A-10.
