Women's Basketball Returns Home To Host Rhode Island Sunday

The Flyers Are 9-0 In A-0 Play

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team returns home from a two-game road stretch to host Rhode Island Sunday at 2 p.m. in Atlantic 10 action.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is 16-7 on the season and riding an 11-game winning streak. The Flyers sit atop the A-10 standings with a 9-0 league mark. UD is 7-2 at home this season as well.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018. She recently earned her 100th career victory.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 65.0 points each contest and holding opponents to 58.0 points. Dayton is shooting 37.9 percent overall, 34.2 percent from three, and 71.0 percent from the free throw line. UD benefits from +3.4 rebounding and +2.1 turnover margins.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Erin Whalen with 13.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while senior Jayla Scaife is chipping in 12.9 points and 5.1 rebounds each outing, and coming off a season-high 25-point performance.

SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island comes to UD Arena with an 11-10 record on the year and a 4-5 A-10 mark. The Rams have lost three of their last four and are 2-7 away from home this season.

Head coach Tammi Reiss is in her first season at URI, joining the Rams after coaching stints at Syracuse and in the WNBA.

This season, Rhode Island is scoring 64.8 points per game and giving up 61.7 points to opposing squads. The Rams are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor, 31.1 percent from behind the arc, and 61.1 percent from the charity stripe. Rhode Island ranks sixth in the nation in rebounds per game and 31st in field goal percentage defense.

Leading the Rams is A-10 Player of the Year candidate Nicole Jorgensen, who is averaging 16.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51.6 percent. She has nine double-doubles this season. Three other Rams are averaging double digit points as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton traveled to Davidson and left with a 55-49 victory over the Wildcats after holding Davidson to just one field goal in the third quarter. The Flyers trailed at halftime in the game. Scaife led with a season-high 25 points.

Rhode Island fell to Fordham on the road Wednesday, 60-50. Nicole Jorgensen led the Rams with 23 points and 11 boards, but a slow start in the first half doomed URI.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Rhode Island have played 28 times previously with the Flyers winning 24 contests, including the last 15 match-ups. In last year's meeting on Feb. 3 in Rhode Island, Dayton was victorious 74-62.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers rank 31 in the country in rebounds as well as 55th in scoring defense and 56th in free throws made. Individually, Shakeela Fowler is 42nd in free throw percentage in Division I.

60 AND UNDER
Dayton has not allowed an opponent to score more than 58 points since its first win of the 11-game winning streak against East Carolina on Dec. 21.

SCAIFE NAMED A-10 POW
Senior forward Jayla Scaife earned her first A-10 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 27 after averaging 20.5 points an 9.0 rebounds in Dayton's two wins over George Washington and Fordham.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
In Coach Green's four year tenure at UD, the Flyers are 28-2 in the month of January including perfect marks in 2016-17, 2017-18, and this season as well.

FLYERS BY 40
Dayton defeated La Salle on Jan. 4, 2020 in the A-10 opener 98-58, the first 40-point win for the Flyers since defeating La Salle on Feb. 22, 2015, 91-49, at home. Dayton scored 94+ points in two of three straight games.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 108 of its last 133 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.812), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.
