PITTSBURGH – The University of Dayton men's tennis team opened up Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 5-2 win on the road at Duquesne Sunday.
The Dukes picked up the doubles point by taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, but the Flyers bounced back with wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles.
Flyer freshman
Georgi Mavrodiev won both his matches, at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles, and he clinched the victory for UD with his singles triumph.
Fellow freshman
Connor Bruce won at No. 1 singles.
"Today we didn't play Flyer tennis. We allowed them (Duquesne) to have higher energy which resulted in some tight matches," said Bruce. "It does feel good to come back to Dayton with a win but we are past it and look forward to working our butts off this week in preparation for IUPUI. Go Flyers!"
Sophomore
Matt DeMarco at No. 3 singles, freshman
Joe DeMarco at No. 5 singles, and junior
Will Harper at No. 6 singles also picked up wins for Dayton.
"It's good to get the W but we didn't play well today. We have goals to compete for a conference championship and today we didn't play anywhere near that level," said head coach
Ryan Meyer. "We're going to spend this week making improvements and preparing for IUPUI."
