Baseball Drops Monday Contest Against Morehead State

Marcos Pujols And Jared Howell Homer In Defeat

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Dayton baseball team fell on the road at Morehead State on Monday 19-5.

With inclement weather forecasted for Tuesday, the game was moved up one day in order to play under better conditions.

With the loss, the Flyers drop to 6-8 on the season as two six-run innings from the Eagles created a deficit Dayton could not overcome. Marcos Pujols and Jared Howell led the team offensively, with each hitting two-run home run while Mariano Ricciardi added three hits.

On the Mound
Eleven different pitchers saw the mound for Dayton in the contest. R.J. Wagner started for the Flyers, lasting 0.1 innings allowing four runs and saw just five hitters before being replaced by Andrew Zapka.

Corey Imbriano pitched a scoreless third inning, adding a strikeout and a pickoff in his one frame on the mound. Brian Robertson and Dylan Keller also did not allow a run in their time on the hill, with Robertson going 0.1 innings and Keller tossing a scoreless sixth.

Scoring Plays
Bottom 1: (6-0 Morehead State)
The Flyers got into a hole early allowing four hits in the six-run first inning for Morehead State, capped off by a 3-run home run off of Andrew Zapka.

Bottom 2: (9-0 Morehead State)
After Tyler Jones retired the first hitter of the inning, the Eagles put three-straight hits together with the third being another three-run home run to center field to stretch the deficit for Dayton to nine.

Bottom 4: (15-0 Morehead State)
The Flyers retired the first hitter, but then allowed a walk and two singles to load the bases. Dayton struck out the next batter, but a wild pitch, a double, and a two-run home run made it a 14-0 game. Two walks and a single followed that to bring in another run before the second six-run inning ended.

Bottom 5: (16-0 Morehead State)
Kyle Lacalameto entered the game and after retiring the first hitter, allowed a home run to left field. Lacalameto bounced back to keep the Eagles off the board the rest of the inning.

Top 6: (16-2 Morehead State)
Mariano Ricciardi reached to open the inning before Marcos Pujols hit his second home run of the season to left center field, putting the Flyers on the board.

Bottom 7: (17-2 Morehead State)
Nate Espelin entered for Dayton and retired the first two batters he faced before allowing a solo home run to left giving the Eagles another run.

Top 8: (17-5 Morehead State)
Alex Brickman hit a one-out single to right field and Jared Howell followed with his first home run of the season to right field as well. Sam Scott, Bryce Hellgeth, and Brantley Johnson all singled before Mariano Ricciardi drove in another run with a single to left field capping off the scoring for Dayton.

Bottom 8: (19-5 Morehead State)
Jared Howell moved from left to the mound for the eighth inning. He hit the first batter, then got a strikeout before walking the next two to load the bases. After retiring another hitter with a strikeout, he walked in one run. The ball got to the backstop and another run came into score making it 19-5 and ending the scoring for the night.
