Women's Basketball Hosts Duke Friday

The Flyers and Blue Devils Are Both 1-0 This Season

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will continue the regular season Friday, Nov. 12 when it hosts Duke University at 7 p.m. at UD Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters the weekend with a 1-0 record overall after defeating Alabama A&M in the season opener. The Flyers last lost at home on Feb. 20 against Saint Louis in 2020-21.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She earned her 100th win at Dayton in the regular season final last year.

As a team this year, Dayton is scoring 73.0 points per game while holding opponents to 52.0 points each outing. The Flyers are shooting 43.5 percent overall, 53.3 percent from three, and 68.8 percent from the free throw line. UD has a +4.0 rebounding margin and fewer turnovers per game.

Dayton is led by sophomore Makira Cook, who had 23 points and six rebounds, both career-highs in the opening win. Grad students Jenna Giacone and Erin Whalen both chipped in 16 points each while Giacone had 10 rebounds as well.

SCOUTING DUKE
Duke is also 1-0 on the year with a win over Winthrop on opening day. The Blue Devils had a victory over Wingate in preseason as well. The 2020-21 season was shortlived for Duke, playing just four games before they decided to end their season for COVID concerns.

Head coach Kara Lawson is in her first full season as head coach of the Blue Devils after joining in July 2020. She is a former WNBA and Olympic Champion.

After one game this season, the Blue Devils are scoring 95.0 points each contest and allowing just 39.0 points to opponents. Duke is shooting 50 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from behind the arc, and 100 percent from the charity stripe. The Blue Devils have a +14.0 rebounding margin and +18.0 turnover margin.

Duke has five players in double-digit scoring figures, led by Lexi Gordon with 17.0 points and a 50 percent three-point percentage. Imani Lewis added 16 points and went 6-of-7 in the opener off the bench as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton kicked off its regular season with a 73-52 victory over Alabama A&M Tuesday at home. The Flyers scored 50 points in the second half alone and had a team-high 23 points from sophomore Makira Cook.

Duke opened its season Tuesday with a dominating win over Winthrop at home, 95-39. The Blue Devils had five players in double-figures including a team-high 17 points from Lexi Gordon. Duke shot 50 percent overall and had 47 bench points.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Duke are meeting for just the second time in program history, having last played on Jan. 3, 1981. On that date, the Flyers defeated the Blue Devils 99-78 at home. That was the season after Dayton won its 1979-80 AIAW National Championship.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
After one game this year, the Flyers rank 12th in the country in three point field goal percentage and 28th in three point defensive percentage. UD is also 34th in fewest turnovers per game as well. Individually, Makira Cook is 30th nationally in points per game and 13th in made field goals. Erin Whalen ranks 24th in three point field goals made.

FLYERS FAVORITE IN PRESEASON POLL
Dayton was picked to as preseason favorites after winning the A-10 regular season in 2020-21. The Flyers received 11 first-place votes and were selected ahead of Rhode Island, Fordham, Saint Louis, and VCU.

PRESEASON HONORS
The Atlantic 10 released its preseason all-conference teams and recognized four Flyers ahead of the upcoming campaign. Grad student Jenna Giacone was named First Team while fellow grad student Erin Whalen was named Second Team. Sophomore center Tenin Magassa was named to the Third Team and grad student Araion Bradshaw picked up All-Defensive Team accolades.

FLYERS DOMINATE IN EXHIBITION
The Flyers had one preseason game this year on Nov. 5 at home where they defeated IUP 83-46. Dayton had five players in double-figures scoring and shot 61.2 percent from the field, higher than any total the previous season.

BRADSHAW NAMED A-10 WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
The Atlantic 10 Conference chose its NCAA Woman of the Year nominees and selected University of Dayton graduate student Araion Bradshaw as one of the two representatives. Bradshaw is the point guard with the women's basketball program and entering her fifth year at UD this fall. The Boston, Mass. native has helped lead the Flyers to four A-10 Championship titles. Bradshaw is a graduate student with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, master's in engineering management, and working on her master's in business management.

Off the court, she has been just as impactful. She started the Athletes Driving Change organization that is a group of minority A-10 women's basketball players focused on the mission to "promote permanent change toward equality through the voices of Atlantic 10 female athletes using a unified and inclusive platform." She earned the Social Justice Award at this year's R.U.D.Y.S. Banquet for her work on equality and education. Bradshaw is a passionate and vocal leader in the community and has represented the University with the upmost integrity.

FLYERS DOMINATE A-10 MAJOR HONORS
The Atlantic 10 Conference released its end-of-the-season awards the week prior to the tournament and recgonized three Flyers with major awards. Redshirt senior Jenna Giacone was named Most Improved Player as well as First Team All-Conference. Fellow senior Araion Bradshaw took home Defensive Player of the Year accolades as well as Third Team and All-Defensive team. Freshman center Tenin Magassa was named Sixth Woman of the Year and named to the All-Rookie Team. On top of that, redshirt senior Erin Whalen was named to the Second Team and All-Academic team, totaling nine awards for the Flyers.

FLYERS CLINCH SIXTH A-10 TITLE
After going 12-1 in the regular season, the Flyers clinched their sixth overall regular season league title and second straight. It was also the fourth in five years under head coach Shauna Green.

POSTSEASON EXPECTATION
The Flyers have made 14-consecutive postseason appearances between the NCAA Division I Tournament and the Women's National Invitational Tournament. Here are the past 14 campaigns

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 175-22 (.895) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
