Men's Soccer Faces No. 8 Saint Louis in A-10 Quarterfinals

The No. 8 Seed Flyers Take On No. 1 Seed Saint Louis

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will travel to Missouri to compete the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals against No. 1 seed Saint Louis Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton earned its way into the postseason with a win on the final day of the season, posting a 3-4-1 A-10 mark for 10 points and benefiting from tiebreakers. The Flyers are 6-8-3 overall on the year and 1-5-1 away from home.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 17th year at the helm of the Flyers and the reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. UD replaces just one starter from last year's team that went on to win the A-10 regular season title with a 4-1-1 conference mark.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 1.47 goals per game and giving up 1.82 goals to opposing teams. Dayton is being out-shot 13.0 to 14.7 each contest.

Leading the way for the Flyers is senior Kingsford Adjei, who has five goals and three assists, and junior Forster Ajago, who has a team-high six goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Marc Kouadio has started all 17 games with 72 saves.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
SAINT LOUIS

Saint Louis enters the tournament with an A-10 regular season title and No. 8 ranking nationally. The Billikens are unbeaten this year with a 12-0-3 record overall and a perfect 8-0 A-10 mark.

Head coach Kevin Kalish is in his fourth season at Saint Louis and earned his first A-10 title.

As a team, SLU ranks Top 10 in the country in multiple categories, including fourth in points per game, second in shots on goal per game, seventh in total goals and ninth in total assists. The Billikens are scoring 2.60 goals per game and holding opponents to just 0.73 goals.

Individually, SLU is led by John Klein (4 goals, 15 assists), who leads the country in assists while Simon Becher (11 goals, seven assists) is 11th in scoring and sixth in total points. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte has 33 saves and seven shutouts in 15 games this season.

LAST OUTING
Dayton battled back to a 4-3 overtime victory over Duquesne in the regular season finale, clinching a spot in the A-10 tournament. Sophomore Michael Adedokun scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.

Saint Louis kept its undefeated season going with a 3-1 win at home against Rhode Island on Oct. 30. The Billikens got first half goals from Becher and Kipp Keller, and another at the 59th minute mark by John Klein.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and SLU have faced off 28 times previously with the Billikens holding an 18-7 win advantage over the Flyers. SLU won the meeting earlier this year at home, 2-0. Becher and Isaiah Parker were on the scoresheet in the victory.

JONES-RILEY EARNS A-10 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Junior Jaden Jones-Riley was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 30 after his hat-trick performance in the season-opening win over UAB. He totaled seven points during the two-game stretch.

FLYERS THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL
Dayton was predicted to finish third in the A-10 in the 2021 preseason poll and received two first-place votes. The Flyers were picked behind conference favorites Fordham (six first-place votes) and Saint Louis (three votes), but ahead of Massachusetts and VCU (two votes).

ADJEI NAMED PRESEASON FIRST TEAM
The Atlantic 10 preseason all-conference teams announced as well with Dayton senior Kingsford Adjei earning All-Conference team honors. He was the lone Flyer recognized on the team from the reigning A-10 champs.

UP NEXT
The Flyers have to win Saturday against Saint Louis to advance to the A-10 Semifinals on Nov. 12 at the highest remaining seed's home field.

IN EXTRA TIME
Dayton has played five overtime games so far this season, going 2-0-3 in those contests. The Flyers earned a double-overtime draw with Memphis at the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, before picking up a 3-2 double-OT victory over Incarnate Word the very next outing. UD then went on to draw with Kansas City and Davidson this season. In the regular season finale, the Flyers earned a 4-3 OT victory over Duquesne to earn a spot in the A-10 Championship.

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
Dayton historically has had a diverse team with players hailing from all over the globe. This season is no different with the Flyers having student-athletes from 10 different countries.

PRESEASON SUCCESS
The Flyers were victorious in all three of their preseason games this year, outscoring opponents 10-2 during the stretch. Dayton opened the 2021 preseason with a 4-2 victory at IUPUI before hosting a pair of exhibitions at Baujan Field. UD then defeated Bellarmine 1-0, avenging a regular season loss from last season and earned a 5-0 thumping of Wabash in the preseason finale.

FLYERS THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL

FLYERS IN THE PROS
A pair of former Flyers are currently applying their trade for MLS teams this season. The 2016 A-10 Defender of the Year and No. 5 overall pick by the Columbus Crew now plays for the Colorado Rapids and is having a career-season. Last year's and two-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Jonas Fjeldberg was selected by F.C. Cincinnati this past spring in the MLS Draft and is training with the MLS side. He has yet to see first team action this season, but is playing for Rio Grande Valley in the USL.

USL2 CHAMPS
Current Flyers Kingsford Adjei and Seth Antwi competed this past summer with the Des Moines Menace in the USL2 League and helped their team to the league championship. Adjei scored five goals in the first five games of the season and was ranked as the No. 1 prospect overall in the USL2 League. Antwi and Adjei join former Flyer and current Colorado Rapids defender Lalas Abubakar who won the USL2 title as well with Flint City Bucks back during his college career.

2020 A-10 COACH OF THE YEAR
Dayton head coach Dennis Currier was named the 2020-21 A-10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Flyers to the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the A-10 Championship with a 4-1-1 league mark this past spring. It was the second time Currier received this accolade.

MAJOR A-10 HONOR
Besides Currier earning a major award, junior Kingsford Adjei was named A-10 Midfielder of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the team with five goals and four assists. He joined the now graduated Jonas Fieldberg who received A-10 Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second time as well.
