Women’s Basketball Holds Strong In Road Win At Illinois St.

The Flyers Won Their Third Straight Contest

NORMAL, Ill.  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fended off any Illinois State University rally as they won on the road, 78-67 Sunday.

The Flyers (6-2) win their third straight while the Redbirds (2-6) suffer the home loss.

KEY MOMENT
4th quarter – 9:22 – Dayton led by just one point early in the fourth quarter, but went on a 6-0 run to the midway point of the fourth and never let ISU within a possession the rest of the way.  

1st Quarter: Dayton 17, Illinois St. 19
  • Dayton jumped out to an early lead in the first three minutes thanks to a pair of buckets from senior Kyla Whitehead and a pair of threes from graduate student Erin Whalen.
  • The two teams traded baskets back and forth and by the media break, the Flyers held a narrow 15-14 lead over the Redbirds.
  • Illinois State took its first lead of the game at 16-15 with under four minutes to play, that was amidst an 8-0 Redbird run.
  • A drive and finish by sophomore Makira Cook with 1:40 to go ended the Flyers skid.
  • Whalen had a team-high nine points in the opening quarter on three three-pointers.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 44, Illinois St. 29
  • UD was the first team to strike in the second at the 8:30 mark with a three from Cook, giving the Flyers a 20-19 lead.
  • Grad student Araion Bradshaw followed with another three in transition on the next possession.
  • Junior Mariah Perez had back-to-back buckets for the Flyers to keep the visitors on top.
  • Both teams were on fire midway through the quarter, combining for a 7-for-7 stretch.
  • Freshman Brynn Shoup-Hill nailed back-to-back threes with just over two minutes to play to put Dayton up 13 points and force an ISU timeout. She then did it again with another pair of threes to give her a career-high 12 points already.
  • Whalen also matched Shoup-Hill with 12 points in the half while UD shot 61 percent overall.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 56, Illinois St. 54
  • The Flyers and Redbirds traded buckets early in the second half as the defenses slowed down the tempo.
  • At the media timeout, the Flyers held a 50-38 lead over the Redbirds.
  • Illinois St. was able to cut the margin to single digits by the 3:48 mark, 50-41.
  • The Redbirds pulled even closer at two points with under a minute to go in the quarter.
  • The quarter ended with a layup by Cook to keep the Flyers ahead. She joined Whalen and Shoup-Hill with double-figure scoring efforts.
4th Quarter: Dayton 78, Illinois St. 67
  • The game slowed to a crawl with fouls on the first few possessions by both teams. The Redbirds held the advantage in made free throws through the first three quarters.
  • Whalen hit a big pull-up jumper with 6:21 to play, forcing an ISU timeout as Dayton pushed the margin to 63-56. The Redbirds were three-plus minutes without a point.
  • Just when the Flyers would try to pull away, the Redbirds would answer to stay within striking distance of UD.
  • By the media break, the Flyers were up 69-63 with 3:24 to play.
  • Dayton held ISU without a field goal for nearly four minutes down the stretch.
  • The Flyers maximized the time on their possessions in the final minute and held off any Redbird rally.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
14 – Brynn Shoup-Hill had a career-high 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three.
18 and 7 – Erin Whalen had a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds.
36-31 – The Flyers outrebounded the Redbirds 36-31.
62% - Dayton shot 62 percent from three, going 10-for-18.

KEY STAT
62% - The Flyers were lights-out beyond the arc, going 10-of-18 for 62 percent, a season-high.
