Women’s Basketball Cruises Against Richmond; Remains Undefeated In A-10

Dayton Grabbed Over 50 Rebounds For The First Time This Season

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team defeated the University of Richmond on Friday 72-54. The Flyers competed in their first home game in nearly a month.

Dayton improved to 11-1 overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference play while Richmond fell to 10-5 on the season and 7-3 in the A-10.  

KEY MOMENT
2nd quarter – Dayton went on an 11-0 run over 3:36 to take a 34-22 lead. The Flyers lead never fell below double-digits the rest of the way.  

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 21, Richmond 16
  • Dayton jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the game's first three minutes. Redshirt senior Erin Whalen drained two 3-pointers for six early points.
  • Richmond cut the lead to 12-11 by the first media timeout.
  • After Richmond tied the game at 14, the Flyers scored seven-straight points to take a 21-14 lead late in the quarter.
  • The Flyers forced eight Richmond turnovers in the quarter. Dayton attempted 20 field goals compared to just eight attempts for the Spiders, their lowest number of shot attempts in a quarter this season.
  • Dayton had seven offensive rebounds in the quarter.
  • Dayton eclipsed 20 points in the first quarter for the second straight game.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 40, Richmond 27
  • Richmond cut the lead to one early in the quarter, but Dayton used an 11-0 run to push its lead to 34-22 by the 3:43 mark.
  • The Flyers outscored the Spiders 19-11 in the quarter.
  • Dayton shot 8-for-13 (61.5%) in the quarter, and 17-for-33 (51.5%) for the half.
  • Dayton outrebounded Richmond 20-6 in the half.
  • Even with 40 points, no Flyer had reached double-figures by halftime. Nine different Flyers were on the scoresheet in the first 20 minutes.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 58, Richmond 35
  • Dayton continued its momentum after halftime with an 9-0 run, holding Richmond scoreless for the first 4:55.
  • Sophomore Mariah Perez added six points in the quarter and grabbed six of her 11 rebounds in the quarter.
  • Erin Whalen and Kyla Whitehead each added four points.
  • The Flyers outscored the Spiders 18-8 in the quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 72, Richmond 54
  • Perez scored to reach 10 points, setting another career high on the game. This was her first career double-double and the second double-double by the Flyers this season.
  • Erin Whalen hit her fourth three of the game, tying her season-high for three-pointers made.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
8 – Richmond only attempted eight field goals in the first quarter, their lowest number of shots attempted in a quarter this season. The Spiders also committed eight turnovers in the quarter.
28 – The Flyers scored 28 second-chance points while the Spiders only scored three.
0 – Dayton did not allow a single Richmond offensive rebound in the first half.
11 – Perez grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds on the night. She also set career highs with three assists and 10 points.
28 – UD had 28 bench points while Richmond scored 14.
 
KEY STAT
51 – Dayton grabbed a season-high 51 rebounds, including a season-high 27 on the offensive end. The Flyers' offensive rebound total bettered Richmond's 23 total rebounds.
