Men's Tennis Sweeps Northern Kentucky In Wednesday Contest

Flyers Improve To 8-5 In 2021

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's tennis team improved to 7-0 at South Regency Tennis Center in 2021 with a 7-0 sweep of Northern Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm happy with the way our guys competed today," head coach Ryan Meyer said. "NKU is always a gritty team and we have to bring our best. Right from doubles we took control on all courts and didn't let up. Now we prepare for Duquesne and SLU."

The Flyers are 8-5 overall this season and have won eight of their last nine matches, including three consecutive wins in which UD did not drop a point.

Dayton opened up the match taking doubles in quick fashion. Senior Steven Karl and sophomore Matt DeMarco took No. 2 doubles 6-1 to open play. Junior Joe DeMarco and sophomore Georgi Mavrodiev gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead, taking the point after winning the third doubles flight by the same score of 6-1.

Singles play would continue in that trend for the Flyers, with UD dropping just one set combined in all singles flights. Sophomore Connor Bruce took No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 over Northern Kentucky's Emilien Burnel. Karl came back after dropping the first set to take the next two in the second singles flight and Mavrodiev's win in No. 3 singles gave Dayton the four points needed to clinch the match.

Matt DeMarco, freshman Erik Eliasson, and senior Will Harper took the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles flights in straight sets as well to give the match its 7-0 final score.

The Flyers are off next weekend and will compete in Atlantic 10 matches for the first time this season with contests at home against Duquesne on Friday, March 26 at 7 p.m. and Saint Louis on Sunday, March 28 at 10 a.m.
