ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Dayton women's tennis team fell to Duquesne 4-0 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando on Wednesday afternoon. The Flyers finish the season with a 5-14 record while the Dukes move on to the quarterfinals to take on top seeded VCU.
Â
Dayton had an opportunity to take an early lead in the match after senior
Kelly Pleiman and freshman
Sarah DeMarco took the No. 3 doubles flight 6-2 over Natasha Novak and Priyanka Mitta, however UD failed to take either of the other two doubles flights, putting the Flyers down 1-0.
Â
Sophomores
Erica Wojcikiewicz and
Elizabeth Hamilton, as well as Pleiman each took their first sets in singles play, with Wojcikiewicz holding a 1-0 lead in No. 2 singles, Hamilton in the third singles flight and Pleiman in No. 5 singles, but Duquesne took the match by winning courts one, four, and six to take the contest and end UD's season.
Â
Pleiman is the only member of this lineup not returning next season, as the Flyers will return seven student-athletes and five of six members from this year's A-10 Championship lineup in sophomore
Paige Kompa, Wojcikiewicz, Hamilton, DeMarco, and junior
Natalie Stanton.
