DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's tennis team is set to open the 2021 fall season on Sunday, Sept. 12, against Wittenberg. The match is scheduled for noon at Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Dayton.
Â
This marks the first of four events that the program will compete in during the fall season, and the first of two in Dayton. The Flyers return all but three from last year's team, including five of the six who appeared in last year's Atlantic 10 Championship.
Â
"I'm excited to kick off the season against an improved Wittenberg team," head coach
Erica Echko said. "We have three new freshmen that I'm eager to watch compete in a real match situation. This match also gives us a chance to test some new doubles combinations."
Â
That trio of freshmen who will make their collegiate debuts this season are
Laura Greb,
Neena Katauskas, and
Jordan Mitchell.
Â
Junior
Erica Wojcikiewicz led the Flyers in singles victories finishing 9-8 overall and 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play and was named to the A-10 Women's Tennis All-Academic Team last season. Fellow juniors
Paige Kompa and
Elizabeth Hamilton also return after a 9-8 season paired together in the No. 1 doubles flight. Kompa also recorded 15 decisions in the top singles flight, while Hamilton earned six victories between No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Â
Seniors
Natalie Stanton and
Claire Ghidotti as well as sophomore
Sarah DeMarco also return for Dayton, with Stanton and DeMarco each recording double-digit decisions last season and Ghidotti leading the Flyers in winning percentage, finishing with a 4-2 record in singles play.
Â
Wittenberg will also compete for the first time this season after the program's first two matches were cancelled. The Tigers return five consistent contributors to the team's singles lineup, including PJ Meyers and Sydney Khosla, who each were mainstays of the top two singles flights last season.
