Women's Basketball Cruises Past Saint Louis

Makira Cook and Erin Whalen Dominate In Win

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team continued their winning ways, beating Saint Louis 77-59 at UD Arena.

The Flyers improve to 11-3 (3-0 A-10) while the Billikens fall to 4-9 (0-1 A-10) going into the rest of Atlantic 10 play. 

KEY MOMENT

1:19 in the 3rd - Sophomore Makira Cook  and Graduate Student Erin Whalen drained back to back jumpers at the 1:19 mark of the third quarter. This put the Flyers up 15 and they never looked back.

GAME BREAKDOWN

1st Quarter: Dayton 22, Saint Louis 16

  • Whalen drained a three-pointer off of an assist from Cook at the 9:07 mark to give the Flyers their first lead, 4-2.

  • Whalen led the Flyers early on, scoring eight of the Flyers first 11 points.

  • A 6-0 Saint Louis run tied the game up at 14 before a Cook jumper put the Flyers up a pair.

  • The Flyers ended the quarter on an 8-2 run, taking a six point lead into the second quarter.

  • Senior Kyla Whitehead dominated the boards, out-rebounding Saint Louis' entire team 6-5.

2nd Quarter: Dayton 33, Saint Louis 24

  • The Flyers continued their run, starting off the quarter on a 6-0.

  • Dayton held Saint Louis scoreless until the 5:34 mark of the quarter.

  • Dayton hit a cold streak, carrying a 28-20 lead into the first media timeout at the 4:25 mark of the quarter.

  • The Flyers defense dug in, holding the Billikens without a point in the final 2:52 of the half.

3rd Quarter: Dayton 56, Saint Louis 44

  • Cook started off the scoring for the Flyers, hitting a tough jumper in the lane to make it 35-26.

  • Graduate Student Jenna Giacone hit her first field goal of the game, finishing a layup in transition at the 5:29 mark.

  • Neither team seized momentum early as the pace slowed down, resulting in a 42-33 Flyers lead at the first media timeout (4:44).

  • Whalen hit her fourth three-pointer of the game, giving her 20 points and the Flyers a 12 point lead.

  • The Flyers stars took over, with Cook, Giacone, and Whalen scoring 20 of the Flyers 23 points in the quarter.

4th Quarter: Dayton 77, Saint Louis 59

  • The Flyers went on a 10-2 run to give them their biggest lead of the day, 66-48 at the 6:46 mark of the quarter.

  • Cook scored six early points in the quarter, giving her 21 points on the day. That marks the fifth time that she has passed the 20 point threshold this season. 

  • Cook also recorded her seventh assist of the game, giving her a career high.

  • Eight different Flyers scored. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • 15- Erin Whalen scored 15 first half points and propelled the Flyers to a halftime lead.

  • 9- Kyla Whitehead pulled down nine first half rebounds.

  • 23 - The Flyers scored 23 third quarter points to extend their lead.

  • 7 - Makira Cook dished out a career high seven assists. 

  • 49 - The Flyers outrebounded the Billiekens 49-24.
     

KEY STAT

20+ - Two Flyers had 20+ points in the game: Cook had 27 while Whalen had 22. This was the first time that two Flyers surpassed 20 points in the same game this season.

  • The Flyers head to Amherst to play Massachusetts on Wednesday, January 19th at 7pm. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
