Women's Basketball Returns Home To Host Duquesne Wednesday Night

The Flyers and Dukes Tip-Off At 7 p.m. At UD Arena

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team returns home to host Duquesne University Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena in Atlantic 10 action.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is riding a 10-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 8 and sits at 16-3 overall and 7-0 in Atlantic 10 play.  UD is also 7-1 at home this year and returns from playing three of the last four on the road.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She earned her 100th win at Dayton in the regular season finale last year.

As a team this year, Dayton is averaging 68.7 points per game and holding opposing teams to 57.5 points each outing. The Flyers are shooting 40.7 percent overall, 36.0 percent from three point range, and 68.1 percent from the free throw line. One of the top rebounding teams in the A-10, UD is outrebounding opponents by +7.5.

Dayton is led by sophomore Makira Cook, with 15.6 points per game, and graduate student Erin Whalen, with 15.3 points and 5.9 boards per game. Fellow grad student Jenna Giacone is contributing 12.3 points as well.

SCOUTING DUQUESNE
Duquesne comes to Dayton with a 9-11 record on the year and 4-4 A-10 mark. The Dukes have won three games in a row, but are 2-7 away from home this season.

Head coach Dan Burt is in his ninth season as head coach and 15th on the Dukes' staff.

This season Duquesne is scoring 63.8 points per game and giving up 63.3 points to opposing squads. The Dukes are shooting 40.1 percent from the floor, 31.9 percent from behind the arc, and 70.6 percent from the charity stripe. Duquesne is being outrebounded by opponents, but committing fewer turnovers.

Leading the Dukes effort is Tess Myers and Fatou Pouye with 12.9 points per game each. Megan McConnell is chipping in 9.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton went on the road and picked up a 70-60 victory at Davidson Sunday. The Flyers outscored the Wildcats 21-4 in the third quarter alone. Kyla Whitehead had a career-high 15 rebounds while Makira Cook added 18 points.

Duquesne defended its home court with a 67-48 win over La Salle Sunday. The Dukes made 10 threes and were perfect from the free throw line and got a team-high 20 points from Tesss Myers.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Duquesne have played 45 times previously with the Flyers winning 24 contests to the Dukes' 21 wins. UD has won seven of the last eight games including last year's 64-48 win at home on Jan. 3, 2021.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 17th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game and 23rd in total rebounds per game as well as 22nd in turnovers per game. Individually, Araion Bradshaw is sixth in the country in assist to turnover ratio while Tenin Magassa is 34th in blocks and Erin Whalen is 29th in three pointers per game.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 639 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 183-22 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
