Football Beats Drake 27-14 On Family Weekend

Dayton Opens 1-0 In The Pioneer Football League

Box Score DAYTON -- The University of Dayton Flyer football opened Pioneer Football league play Saturday with a 27-14 win over Drake in front of a Family Weekend crowd.  Jake Chisholm led the UD attack, scoring two touchdowns and gaining 169 yards in total offense.  Chisholm ran for 131 yards and was UD's leading pass catcher (tied) with five receptions.  Ben Schmiesing (11 tackles) and Joe Durham (two sacks) led the defense.  Dayton is now 3-1 overall on the season, while Drake falls to 0-5, and 0-2 in the PFL.

1st Quarter -- Dayton 7, Drake 0
  • The two teams exchanged punts to start the game, and then Dayton went on its longest drive of the season, going 90 yards in nine plays.
  • Quarterback Dante Casciola was for-four on the drive, and Jake Chisholm scored the first of two touchdowns with a nine-yard run.
  • UD forced a three-and-out on Drake's last possession of the quarter.
  • The Flyers outgained the Bulldogs 115 to 13 in the first period.
  • Casciola was 10-for-10 passing to start the game.

2nd Quarter -- Dayton 10, Drake 7
  • Dayton punted on the second play of the quarter, but Nate Arthur forced a fumble on the return that was recovered by long snapper Austin Yeager at the Drake 29.
  • That led to a 39-yard field goal by Sam Webster.
  • Drake moved the ball the next time it had it (65 yards in 13 plays), but missed a 27-yard field goal attempt.
  • UD also moved the ball with no points to show for it, going 76 yards in 11 plays, but throwing an interception in the end zone.
  • The Bulldogs took the momentum from that and moved it 80 yards to get on the board just before the end of the half with a 16-yard Ian Corwin-to-Trey Radocha connection.
  • Drake gained 132 yards (helped by converting three of five third downs) while Dayton had 69 yards in the quarter.

3rd Quarter -- Dayton 25, Drake 7
  • The 'Dogs took the second half kickoff and moved into Dayton territory before punting.
  • Both teams had three-and-outs, before a facemask penalty on a punt return gave the Flyers the ball on their own 45.
  • Six plays and 55 yards later, Casciola hit Ty Stylski for a 21-yard score with 5:06 left in the quarter.
  • After the UD defense forced another three-down possession, Dayton scored on a nine-play, 45-yard drive.  Chisholm ran the last 17 yards for that score with 2:02 remaining in the third.
  • Yardage was 91 to 51 in favor of Dayton.

4th Quarter -- Dayton 27, Drake 14
  • The Flyers stopped Drake on a fourth-and-one on the first play of the quarter, and intercepted the Bulldogs on their next offensive play, but Dayton could only move the ball enough to pin Drake on its own 14.
  • After another three-and-out by the Dayton defense set up a 53-yard drive that led to a 21-yard field goal by Webster.
  • Drake then came up with its second scoring drive that was kept alive by a four-down pass interference, driving 71 yards on six plays, with Corwin throwing a second TD pass, this one to Austin Flax.
  • UD's Logan Miller came up with the onside kick, and seven plays later the clock was all zeros.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dayton gained a season-high 360 yards in total offense.
  • Drake had 251 yards -- 151 one on its two scoring drives, and 100 yards combined on its other nine possessions.
  • Dante Casciola was 19 of 24 passing for 176 yards with a touchdown and an interceptions.

  • Chisholm also had his 11th career 100-yard rushing game, getting 131 yards on 24 carries and two rushing scores.
  • Ben Schmiesing led the Dayton D in total tackles (11) and solo hits (5).  The Flyer defensive captain also broke up two passes (both in the red zone) and had half of a sack.

  • Kicker Sam Webster remained perfect on the season, with two field goals and three PAT.
