DAYTON - The 19th-ranked University of Dayton men's soccer team will host Saint Louis University on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. for Senior Day. Prior to the Atlantic 10 showdown, the Flyers will honor the 11 members of the 2022 senior class.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads into the final stretch of the regular season with a 9-0-4 record overall and a 3-0-3 in A-10 play. The Flyers are 5-0-1 at home this year and remains unbeaten on the season.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 18th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 2.69 goals per game and holding opponents to 0.69 goals each outing. Dayton is out-shooting opposing squads 22.5 to 7.7 and at a higher percentage.
UD is led by senior
Forster Ajago with six goals and three assists in 13 games while fellow seniors
Andy Sanchez and
Manny Day have both added five goals each. Sophomore
Michael Adedokun and freshman
Joseph Melto Quiah both have a team-high five assists. Junior goalkeeper
Dario Caetano has six shutouts and 35 saves in 13 starts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
SAINT LOUIS
Saint Louis comes to Dayton with a 8-4-1 record on the season and 4-1-1 A-10 mark. The Billikens have won three in a row and are 4-2 on the road this year. SLU has also won five of the last six games and looks to keep that momentum going against the Flyers.
The reigning A-10 Coach of the Year, head coach Kevin Kalish is in his fifth season with the Billikens and has a 49-21-12 record.
The Billikens are scoring 2.31 goals per outing and giving up 1.46 goals to opponents. Saint Louis is out-shooting opposing squads by a narrow margin of 12.9 to 11.8. SLU ranks 20th in the nation in scoring offense.
Leading the way for the Billikens is All-Conference candidate John Klein, who has six goals and three assists, while Seth Anderson has a team-high four assists to go with two goals. Carlos Tofern has spent the majority of time in goal with 34 saves and two shutouts in 10 starts.
LAST OUTING
Dayton ended a three-game draw streak with a 3-1 win at home over VCU last Saturday. The Flyers scored two goals in the final eight minutes with the game-winner coming from Ajago.
Saint Louis won its third straight game with a 1-0 victory over
George Washington last weekend. The Billikens got the decisive goal in the 69th minute from Mads Stistrup Petersen, despite being out-shot in the contest.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 30th meeting in the series with the Billikens holding a 19-7-3 advantage. Dayton and SLU met twice last season including the first round of the A-10 Tournament, which the Top 10 Billikens won 2-0.
ATTACK MINDED
The Flyers are one of the most dangerous offenses in the country as they lead the nation shots per game and shots on goal per game. Dayton also ranks second in scoring offense and fourth in goal differential and total goals.
FLYERS RANKED 19TH IN USC POLL
In the latest United Soccer Coaches national rankings, Dayton moved up to No. 19 in the country after being No. 22 last week. The Flyers achieved their highest ranking ever this season at No. 16, and it's the fourth season in which they have been in the Top 25 (19th in 2013, 21st in 2009, 22nd in 2008). UD has been in the Top 25 or receiving votes all eight weeks of the regular season.
UMAR PICKS UP A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman midfielder
Basit Umar earned his first A-10 honor after being named A-10 Rookie of the Week Oct. 18. He scored goals against No. 2 Kentucky and VCU, and led the Flyers in shots.
