MARIETTA, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's rowing team competed against Marietta College Saturday on the Muskingum River.
The Flyers came out on top in head-to-head races against Marietta, both in the 5,000-meter and 2,500-meter.
Dayton has two meets this fall and will finish up the first half of the campaign at the Bald Eagle Regatta on Nov. 6 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
"The team enjoyed a beautiful day in Marietta," said head coach Mike Wenker. "On the whole, the team raced well with some room for improvement in the next two weeks before the races in Indianapolis. In a program first, the fours raced in a 'stake race'. In a race against the clock, the fours started every fifteen seconds - raced 1.25 upstream, around a buoy, and 1.25 back to where they started. Boats usually do not stop and spin in the middle of races. Rowers and coxswains had to manage the turn together at full speed with other boats around trying to do the same. Luckily, we practiced a few times at home so that boats had an idea of how to go about it."
