DAYTON – The University of Dayton Flyer football team outlasted the Valparaiso Beacons 31-24 at Welcome Stadium, bringing the Flyers to 4-1 in Pioneer Football League play.
Jake Chisholm rushed for two touchdowns on the day, including a game-winning score in the final minute of the game.
1st Quarter – Dayton 14, Valparaiso 14
- The Flyers got on the board only 2:35Â into the game.
- Two big key plays from Joey Swanson and Michael Neel were capped off by a Jake Chisholm 11-yard touchdown run.
- On Valparaiso's third play, Cole Hildebrand had a 30-yard pick six to put Dayton up 14-0.
- Valparaiso quickly responded with a three-play drive, finished off by Solomon Davis's 67-yard catch from Michael Appel.
- Valparaiso tied the game on a 12-yard touchdown from Appel to Braden Contreras.
2nd Quarter – Dayton 17, Valparaiso 14
- Dayton punted to open the second quarter.
- VU had a 10-play drive to set up a 50-yard field goal attempt by Brian Bartholomew was long enough, but wide. Â
- Valparaiso's Kohlton Sherman had a 34-yard interception against Shane Hamm halfway through the second quarter giving Valparaiso good field position.
- The Flyers made a goal line stand on fourth-and-goal inside the one by Jerell Lewis and Logan Dalton.
- UD drove 92 yards over 4:28 to set up Michael Denning's 24-yard field goal to take the lead going into halftime.Â
3rd Quarter – Dayton 24, Valparaiso 21
- Valparaiso drove 75 yards on their second half opening drive.
- Aaron Dawson scored a 19-yard rushing touchdown to put Valparaiso up 20-17.
- UD had a tipped pass that led to an interception by Anthony Sciarroni.
- Dayton got the ball back and drove 70 yards, with Kyle Hazell catching a two-yard touchdown pass from Shane Hamm to put Dayton up 24-21.
- The third quarter ended with Valparaiso driving down the field.
4th Quarter – Dayton 31, Valparaiso 24
- Valparaiso tied the game at 24-24 two plays into the fourth quarter on Bartholomew's 35-yard field goal.
- Dayton moved the ball on the next possession, but Hamm was hit as he threw and the Beacons' Tyler Days made a diving interception at the VU 2.
- UD forced a punt and moved the ball 60 yards, but missed a 29-yard field goal attempt with 5:50 remaining in the game.
- Valparaiso made a first down on the first play of the next series, but back-to-back sacks eventually forced another punt.
- The Flyers had the ball on their own 32 with 2:57 left, and drove 68 yards in nine plays, the last 23 coming from Jake Chisholm with 18 seconds left.
- Dayton's kickoff coverage tackled the Valpo returner at the 15, Sam Schadek sacked Appel on the first play and a hook-and-lateral play gained just two yards to end the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dayton scored on its first possession for the first time in 2022.
- The Flyers scored 14 points in the first quarter, after scoring a total of 17 points in the first period all season.
- In a matchup of the teams with the top two ground gainers in the PFL, Valparaiso's Aaron Dawson was held nearly 50 yards under his average with 69 yards on 18 carries with a TD.  UD's Jake Chisholm also had 18 rushing attempts, with 103 yards and two touchdowns.
- But it was the Flyer quarterback, Shane Hamm, who was the game's top ground gainer, with 129 yards on 25 attempts.
- Hamm was also 12 of 19 passing for 137 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
- Valpo QB Mikey Appel was 22 of 29 for 323 yards with two scores and a pick.
- Luke Brenner caught four passes for 28 yards, and Derek Willits had three for 43 yards.
- Linebacker Ben Schmiesing led UD with 10 tackles.
- Safety Logan Dalton's five solo hits also led the Flyers in that category.
- Sam Schadek had 3.5 sacks in the game, including 2.5 in the fourth quarter on Valparaiso's final two possessions.
- Dayton outgained Valpo 152 to 48 in the fourth quarter. Hamm ran for 68 yards on eight carries (8.5 avg.), and Chisholm had 56 yards on six rushes (9.3 avg.).
- The win was the Flyers' 699th victory as a varsity football program.

- Dayton will go for win number 700 on the road next week, making its first trip to Presbyterian on Saturday, Nov. 5. Â
