Football Falls At Butler

Flyers Shut Out For The First Time In 502 Games

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Dayton Flyer football team was beaten by the Butler Bulldogs 31-0 Saturday at the Selick Bowl on the Butler campus.  The shutout was the first against the Flyers in 502 games, dating back to the 1976 season.

Dayton falls to 3-2 on the season, and 1-1 in the Pioneer Football League.  Butler is now also 3-2 and 1-1 in the PFL.  

1st Quarter – Butler 3, Dayton 0
  • Butler took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards to set up a Luka Zurak 29-yard field goal.
  • Dayton's first possession ended with a 42-yard field goal attempt that was wide.  It was Sam Webster's first miss of the season in eight attempts.
  • The UD defense forced a punt on the next possession and the Flyers kept the ball the rest of the quarter.  
  • Butler outgained Dayton 89 to 63 in the quarter.
2nd Quarter – Butler 10, Dayton 0
  • None of UD's possessions ended in its own territory, but the Flyers were unable to put points on the board.
  • Butler's touchdown drive covered 87 yards and ended with a one-yard pass by Bret Bushka to Cameron Healed. The Bulldogs out-gained the Flyers 87-66.
  • Dayton quarterback Dante Casciola was 11 of 15 passing for 85 yards, but Bushka was 13 of 14 for 135 yards.
3rd Quarter – Butler 24, Dayton 0
  • Butler scored on its first and last drives of the third quarter.
  • The first drive was a 69-yard drive, and the second was 95-yard drive.
  • Butler outgained Dayton 169 to 11 in the quarter.
4th Quarter – Butler 31, Dayton 0
  • Every previous scoring drive for Butler took at least 12 plays, but the Bulldogs used just one play to go 75 yards for the final score of the game.
  • Dayton ran 28 plays and gained 183 yards, while Butler snapped the ball eight times and gained 99.
  • UD's drives in the fourth quarter ended at the Butler 25-, 9- and 20-yard lines.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Total offense for the day ended up 444 to 328 in favor of Butler.
  • Dante Casciola was 15 of 24 passing, for 178 yards with an interception.
  • Jake Chisholm was the top ground gainer in the game, with 15 carries for 47 yards.
  • Joey Swanson caught five passes for 46 yards, while Sam Bubonics caught two for 74 yards.
  • Ben Schmeising led UD with 10 tackles, and Nathan Arthur led in solo tackles with six.
