Women’s Basketball Battles To End In OT Loss

The Flyers Tied The Game In The Final Seconds Of Regulation But Could Not Secure The Win

DAYTON  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team's home debut ended in an overtime loss on Thursday night against the Illinois State Redbirds.
 
The Flyers (0-2) lose their second game of the season in overtime as the Redbirds (1-0) begin their season with a victory on the road.
 
KEY MOMENT
4th – 0:10 – Destiny Bohanon hit a corner three pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation to send the Flyers into overtime.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Illinois State 12
  • Senior Sydney Freeman scores the first field goal of the game 2:39 into the first quarter. The Redbirds responded by hitting a three-pointer on the next possession.
  • Both teams created turnovers which led to a slow start for both teams with scoring.
  • The Flyers gained a steady lead over the Redbirds as they made six of their last seven field goals.
  • Freshman guard Nayo Lear led the Flyers in scoring with four points at the end of the first quarter.
  • Junior Anyssa Jones was the leader in rebounds, recording three in her first quarter at UD Arena.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, Illinois State 28
  • Lear scored the Flyers' first basket 4:30 into the second quarter while Dayton maintained their lead.
  • At the media timeout, the Flyers hung onto a one-point lead over the Redbirds, who outscored them 9-4 with 4:55 to go until halftime.
  • Dayton took a timeout shortly after the media timeout when the Redbirds tied the game at 24-24 with 4:04 to go.
  • After swapping leads and tying the score, junior Taisiya Kozlova put the Flyers ahead by draining a three to end the half.
  • Turnovers plagued both teams as the Flyers' offense let up 14 turnovers in the first half.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 49, Illinois State 45
  • Kozlova started the Flyers' second half strong by hitting two threes only a couple of minutes into the half. This put Dayton on an 8-0 scoring run.
  • Redshirt senior Maliya Perry sank a three to give Dayton its largest lead of the night at 12 points.
  • Lear ended a nearly three minute scoring drought by the Flyers by hitting a three with 2:54 left in the quarter.
  • A 13-3 run by the Redbirds made the game significantly closer as they got within two points of the Flyers.
  • Perry's two successful free throws extended Dayton's lead to end the third quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 63, Illinois State 63
  • Freeman hit a short-range jumper to begin the quarter for the Flyers.
  • The Flyers held onto a three-point lead at the media timeout with 5:49 left on the clock.
  • Illinois State took the lead coming out of the media timeout as Mary Compton hit three three-pointers. This put her at 7-for-9 in three-point attempts.
  • Dayton took their last timeout with 1:39 to go when Illinois State tied their largest lead of the game at four points.
  • Mariah Perez hit a jumper followed by a good free throw immediately after the timeout. This cut the Redbirds' lead down to one.
  • Bohanon hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 63-63 with 10 seconds left in regulation.
  • The Flyers' four missed shots (two free throws and two jumpers) led to the first overtime of the season.
Overtime: Dayton 70, Illinois State 74
  • Illinois State scored the first points of overtime with a successful free throw to give them a one-point lead.
  • Perry hit her layup to give Dayton a one-point lead.
  • Two successful free throws by Illinois put the Redbirds up by one with 2:12 to go.
  • A successful three-pointer by Maya Wong of Illinois State gave them a four-point lead.
  • A three-pointer by Bohanon was too little, too late as Flyers were not able to eliminate their four-point deficit.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
4 – Four Flyers scored in the double digits.
:10 – Destiny Bohanon hit a three-pointer to tie the game with 10 seconds left in regulation. 
27 – The Flyers' committed 27 turnovers throughout the game.
13 and 12 – Maliya Perry got her first career double-double with the Flyers, grabbing 12 rebounds to go with 13 points. Both were career-highs.
12 – Taisiya Kozlova had a career-high 12 points, going 4-of-6 from three.
50 – The Flyers had their first 50-rebound game of the season, 13 more than the Redbirds.
 
KEY STAT
25 to 6 – The Redbirds had 25 points off 27 turnovers compared to six points off 12 turnovers for the Flyers.
