Women’s Basketball Runs Into Strong Kentucky Team Wednesday

The Flyers Were Defeated In The Pink Flamingo Championship Finale

NASSAU, Bahamas – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fell in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship finale Wednesday, 70-44.

The Flyers (0-6) were overpowered by the Wildcats (5-1) in the contest, despite outrebounding UK.

KEY MOMENT
2nd quarter – Dayton was outscored 12-5 in the second quarter and the offensive woes continued into the second half.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Kentucky 17
  • The game got off to a fast start with redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon getting a putback on the first possession of the game, only for Kentucky to answer right away.
  • Senior got a tough bucket and the foul to make it a one-point game at the 8:15 mark.
  • After the up-tempo beginning, things started to slow down over the next three minutes with both teams committing three turnovers each during that stretch.
  • By the media timeout, the Flyers trailed 9-5 after shooting 17 percent in the opening stretch.
  • Junior Anyssa Jones got an and-one of her own with 3:39 to play to make it a one-point game.
  • Both teams went cold from the field, combining for a 2-for-21 stretch.
  • Bohanon picked the Wildcat guard's pocket and drove for the layup to tie the game up at 12-12 with only 40 seconds on the clock. UK hit a three at the buzzer though to make it a five-point game.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 17, Kentucky 29
  • Junior Taisiya Kozlova hit a big three in the first two minutes for the Flyers, her first of the game.
  • The tight defense continued to control the pace of the game with neither team scoring for a few minutes, including four-plus for the Wildcats.
  • Midway through the second, the score was 21-15 in favor of the Wildcats.
  • Kentucky woke up though and got the margin to double-digits by the 3:51 mark with a 7-0 run.
  • Turnovers started to rack up for the Flyers, which made it challenging to cut into the margin. They had 16 in the first half.
  • Dayton shot 23 percent in the half to Kentucky's 28 percent.
  • Bohanon and redshirt senior Maliya Perry both had four points to lead the Flyers.
3rd  Quarter: Dayton 32, Kentucky 49
  • UD was forced to call a timeout at the 7:25 mark after a three in transition by Kentucky made it a 36-19 ball game.
  • The Flyers started driving and drawing fouls, trying to earn their way back into the game at the charity stripe via five straight made free throws.
  • By the media break, Dayton had an 8-0 rebounding advantage in the third quarter, despite trailing 40-26.
  • The Wildcats managed to get the margin to 20 at 49-29 with just over a minute to play.
  • Perry ended the quarter with an and-one to cut into the margin.
  • Senior Mariah Perez became the first Flyer in double-digits with 11 points to go with her seven rebounds, both team highs.
4th Quarter: Dayton 44, Kentucky 70
  • The Flyers got a pair of free throws from freshman Nayo Lear at the 7:25 mark to open the fourth quarter scoring for UD, her first points of the game.
  • Kozlova had a nice dump off to Perez for the layup with 4:43 to play in the game.
  • At the media timeout, the score was 63-37 in favor of the Wildcats.
  • Dayton held Kentucky over the next few minutes for an 0-for-6 stretch and four-plus minute scoring drought.
  • The Flyers were unable to catch-up to the 20+ point deficit.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
16 and 10 – Mariah Perez had a season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds in the effort, both team-highs.
26% to 35% - Dayton shot 26 percent overall to Kentucky's 35 percent.
29 – The Flyers had a season-high 29 turnovers in the contest.
44 to 35 – Dayton did outrebound Kentucky including an 8-0 stretch to start the third quarter.

KEY STAT
28 – Kentucky had 28 points off 29 turnovers.
