Men's Soccer Heads To VCU For A-10 Quarterfinals

The Flyers And Rams Meet Again Friday At 7 p.m.

DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will enter the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship tournament as the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed VCU Friday, Nov. 4 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton finished the regular season with a 9-2-4 record overall and 3-2-3 A-10 mark. The Flyers are coming off back-to-back losses, their first of the season, and are 2-1-3 on the road this year.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 18th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 2.47 goals per game and holding opponents to 0.93 goals each outing. Dayton is out-shooting opposing squads 22.1 to 8.3, but at a lower percentage.

UD is led by senior Forster Ajago with seven goals and three assists for 17 points in 15 games. Fellow seniors Andy Sanchez and Manny Day have chipped in five goals each while freshman Joseph Melto Quiah and sophomore Michael Adedokun are tied with a team-high five assists. Junior goalkeeper Dario Caetano has six shutouts and all 15 starts between the posts.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
VCU

VCU earned the No. 4 seed in the A-10 tournament with a 3-1-4 A-10 mark, but was just 3-7-6 on the season overall. The Rams are on a two-game winning streak and are 1-2-4 at home this year.

Head coach Dave Giffard is in his 13th season with the Rams and has a 109 career wins. He will look to guide his team to a rematch after falling to Dayton earlier this season.

The Rams are scoring 1.0 goal per game and giving up 1.63 to opposing teams while being out-shot 19.2 to 8.9. VCU is shooting at a higher percentage however.

Leading the Rams is Camilo Comi with five goals while Jean-Claude Bile has added three goals. Gerardo Castillo has been the main facilitator with a team-high three assists on the year. Goalkeeper John Ermini has made 15 starts with five shutouts and 43 saves.

LAST OUTING
Dayton ended the regular season with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at UMass this past Saturday. The hosts scored with just 18 seconds after the Flyers held the initial lead in the first half.

VCU earned the No. 3 seed after picking up a 2-0 win at St. Bonaventure in the season finale. The Rams scored both goals in the second half, one from Jared Valdes and an own goal by the Bonnies.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and VCU have met 10 times previously with the series split at five wins each. The Flyers won the match-up earlier this season at Baujan Field, 3-1. Goals by Jaden Jones-Riley, Ajago, and Basit Umar gave the Flyers the victory.

ATTACK MINDED
The Flyers are one of the most dangerous offenses in the country as they lead the nation shots per game and shots on goal per game. Dayton also ranks Top 12  in scoring offense , goal differential, and total goals.

UP NEXT
If victorious, the Flyers will move on to the A-10 Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 9 with an opponent to be named later.
