Women’s Basketball Falls Short At Providence

The Flyers Closed The Gap To Five Points In The Fourth But Fell Short

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up the 2022-23 season with a tough loss on the road at Providence College Monday night.

The Flyers (0-1) lose their first game of the season while the Friars (1-0) start off their campaign with a victory.

KEY MOMENT
4th – 3:27 – Dayton closed the gap to just five points at 60-55, but Providence outscored the Flyers 9-5 over the final few minutes.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 11, Providence 18
  • The first points of the season came off free throws from redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon which tied the game up in the opening two minutes.
  • Providence went on a run though and took a 9-2 lead midway through the opening quarter.
  • Bohanon also scored the first bucket of the season for UD out of the break with a pull up jumper.
  • Freshman Nayo Lear followed up with back-to-back buckets to tie the game up at 9-9, her first points as a Flyer.
  • Lear had a team-high seven points in the opening quarter while Bohanon had four.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 21, Providence 29
  • Both teams settled in to start the second quarter defensively as neither team was able to get easy points in the opening three minutes.
  • The Friars put another stretch together though and got the margin to double-digits with 6:30 to go in the quarter.
  • Lear became the first Flyers in double figures this year with 11 in the first quarter and a half alone.
  • Dayton held Providence for a four-minute scoring drought as the Flyers attempted to fight their way back into the game.
  • In the first half, UD shot 28.6 percent to Providence's 34.4 percent. Rebounds were even at 22-23 in favor of the Friars while points in the paint were 18-8 in favor of the hosts.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 37, Providence 47
  • The Flyers came out hungry in the second half and looked to cut into the margin further.
  • The Friars had other ideas though and got the margin to 12 at 35-23, forcing a Dayton timeout with 7:05 on the clock.
  • By the third quarter media, the Flyers still faced an 11-point deficit at 38-27.
  • Bohanon became the second Dayton player to reach double-figures with her 10th point of the game.
  • Sophomore Shannon Wheeler stepped up off the bench with back-to-back buckets, sparking a 6-0 run for Dayton.
4th Quarter: Dayton 60, Providence 69
  • UD and Providence traded baskets back-and-forth to start the fourth as the pace picked up.
  • The Friars called their first timeout of the game at the 7:08 mark to try and slow things down, though still up 10 points.
  • Wheeler became the third Flyer in double digits with her 10th point of the game, all in the second half.
  • Bohanon hit a three at the 6:30 mark to close the gap to just five points.
  • The Flyers kept it close to the end, but just ran out of time to complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
20 – Freshman Nayo Lear scored seven points in the first quarter of her Dayton debut, which led the Flyers. She finished with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
22 – Redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon had a career-high 22 points and hit four threes to go with six rebounds.
9 – Redshirt senior Maliya Perry had a game-high nine rebounds in the effort.
34 – Dayton had 34 of its points from the bench.
36-to-28 – Providence had a 36-28 points in the paint advantage.

KEY STAT
18-to-9 – The Friars made 18 free throws on 23 attempts while the Flyers made nine, for a nine-point difference in the contest.

Dayton will return home to host Illinois State Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the home opener at UD Arena.
