Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short At Toledo

The Flyers Cut It To Single Digits In The Fourth

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's basketball team traveled up I-75 Sunday to take on the University of Toledo and battled to a 57-45 loss.

The Flyers (0-10) still look for their first win on the year while the Rockets (8-2) end their successful week with another victory.  

KEY MOMENT
4th – 8:30 – Dayton got within eight in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but Toledo settled in to fend off any Flyer comeback.  

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 10, Toledo 16
  • Toledo jumped out to the initial lead, but a three by junior Taisiya Kozlova opened the scoring for the Flyers.
  • By the media timeout, the Rockets held a 9-5 advantage while the Flyers were on a 2:37 scoring drought and both teams were on a 1-for-6 stretch.
  • Senior Sydney Freeman nailed a deep three at the 2:55 mark to end the Dayton skid. That basket gave her 1,000 points for her career.
  • The Rockets held a 17-8 rebound advantage after the first quarter.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 19, Toledo 30
  • Toledo hit a three right out of the gate to push the margin to nine.
  • The Flyers kept the margin to single digits as they attempted to climb back within striking distance of the Rockets.
  • Midway through the second, the score was 23-16 as Toledo already had eight offensive rebounds.
  • The Flyers held the Rockets to 1-for-11 from three and a three-plus minute scoring drought, closing the gap to five points.
  • Right before the half, Toledo extended the lead to double-digits.
  • Freshman Nayo Lear, sophomore Shannon Wheeler, and redshirt senior Maliya Perry each had four points to lead UD.
  • Dayton shot 27.6 percent overall, 28.6 percent from three, and 50 percent from the free throw line. Toledo shot 21 threes in the first half to UD's seven attempts.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 35, Toledo 45
  • The Flyers struck first in the second half with a layup by Wheeler on the first possession.
  • An and-one play that resulted in an intentional foul turned into four points for Toledo, making it a 34-21 ball game in the opening minute.
  • Junior Anyssa Jones scored four straight points for the Flyers while the Rockets went cold again from three, a 1-for-12 stretch.
  • An 8-0 run by Dayton made it a seven-point contest midway through the quarter.
  • Jones took over down the stretch and finished with 10 points in the quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 45, Toledo 57
  • Perry hit a clutch pull-up jumper from the free throw line in the late stages of the shot clock to make it single digits once again to start the fourth.
  • Dayton called the first timeout of the game with 7:10 to go in the quarter and looking to set up a late rally for the Flyers.
  • Perry nailed a three at the 3:42 mark to give her double figures as well, forcing a Toledo timeout.
  • In the end, the Flyers ran out of time to catch the Rockets on the road.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
14 – Anyssa Jones had a team-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds, and had 10 points in the third quarter alone.
13 and 9 – Maliya Perry was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards in the effort.
36.5 to 31.3 – Dayton out-shot Toledo 36.5 percent from the floor to the Rockets' 31.3 percent, but the hosts made five more threes.
45 to 36 – The Rockets out-rebounded the Flyers 45-36.
24 – Dayton had 24 points in the paint, two more than Toledo.

KEY STAT
1,000 – Sydney Freeman reached the 1,000-point mark for her career with her first made shot of the game.
