Women’s Basketball Ends Home Stretch With Loss To Fairfield

The Flyers Had A Season-High 83 Points

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fell to Fairfield University 90-83 after a late comeback attempt at UD Arena.
 
The Flyers (0-9) are still searching for their first win as the Stags (4-4) look to add another win to their season.
 
KEY MOMENT
Final two possessions - Fairfield hit its last three free throws to push its lead to two possessions and ended up winning 69-65.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Fairfield 26
  • Freshman Nayo Lear gets the Flyers going with a nice mid range jump shot.
  • Sophomore Shannon Wheeler catches the ball on the block and scores a nice post-move spinning layup.
  • Flyers start cold from beyond the arc as they go 0-4 on their first four attempts.
  • Senior Sydney Freeman drives the lane and finds Wheeler who is starting off red hot for the Flyers.
  • Fairfield continues to shoot well as they are shooting 57 percent from the field with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Stags out-shot Dayton from the three-point line 3-0 in the first quarter.
 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 42, Fairfield 38
  • Senior Mariah Perez starts off the quarter with two quick layups, followed by another Lear jumper. The Flyers start the quarter on a 6-0 run.
  • Lear gets three straight buckets as she is getting red hot from the field.
  • Freeman hits the Flyers first three pointer of the night off a nice pass from redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon.
  • After being down by 12 points, the Flyers make it 30 a piece with another Freeman triple.
  • Lear gives Dayton their first lead since 4-2 with a pull up jumper. Flyers lead 32-30.
  • Dayton goes on a 16-3 run over a span of 4:16 led by Lear, Freeman, and Perez.
  • Redshirt Senior Maliya Perry gets her first bucket of the night with a strong finish at the rim.
  • The Flyers defense held the Stags without a field goal for the last 4:14 of the half.
  • Dayton is shooting 57.1 percent from the field compared to Fairfield's 37.9 percent. The Flyers also out-rebound the Stags 20-12 at half.
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 55, Fairfield 65
  • Flyers get their first free throw attempts on the night as Perez knocks down both of them.
  • The Stags re-take the lead with a triple. 48-46.
  • Technical foul on Perez. Fairfield goes 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
  • Junior Taisiya Kozlova gets her first points of the night with a triple from the corner.
  • Kozlova hits another triple to cut the Flyer deficit to five.
 
4th Quarter: Dayton 83, Farfield 90
  • Freeman gets the scoring in the fourth started for the Flyers with a smooth pull up jumper.
  • Wheeler gets a lay-up off a nice pass from Perry.
  • Bohanon gets the steal and finishes it at the other end plus the foul. She makes the free throw.
  • Perez gets her career high in points (24) with a floater off the assist from Lear.
  • Freeman hits her third three of the night to become the fourth player in double digits for the Flyers.
  • Wheeler shortly after gets a steal and lay up to give Dayton hope late in the game. They are down six with 48.2 remaining in the game.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 4 - Four Flyers had double-digit points on the night: Perez, Lear, Wheeler, and Freeman
43 - The Flyers out-rebounded the Stags 43-27.
24 – Perez had a career-high in points for the second straight game, getting 24 on the night. She also had her fourth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds as well.
38 - Dayton had 38 points in the paint against the Stags who had 28.
26 - Dayton had an impressive 26 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second chance points.
72.2 - The Flyers shot 72.2% from the field in the second quarter which saw them leading by four at halftime.

KEY STAT
24 and 10 – Mariah Perez had her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.
