Women's Basketball Drops Tough Game To VCU

Tenin Magassa Records 14 Points and 12 Rebounds in Loss

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the year in a 60-58 loss to VCU. The Flyers shot 37 percent from the field, snapping their 13-game winning streak spanning back to December.

The Flyers drop to 19-4 (10-1 A-10) while the Rams improve to 12-8 (7-3 A-10) going into the rest of Atlantic 10 play.

GAME BREAKDOWN

1st Quarter: Dayton 17, VCU 9

  • Despite trouble on the offensive end to start the game, the Flyers defense kept them around early, only allowing one bucket in the first 6:39 of the game.

  • Sophomore Makira Cook got the Flyers going with a pair of free throws, sparking a 10-0 run that put Dayton up 10-2.

  • The 10-0 run was led by hard nosed defense, as the Flyers held the Rams to a 5:54 scoring drought and eight straight missed field goals.

  • Balanced scoring pushed the Dayton lead to 17-9, led by Cook's six points.

  • The Flyers scored 12 points in the paint in the quarter.

 

2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, VCU 19

  • Cook led off the Flyer scoring once again, hitting a pull-up basket in transition.

  • Senior Kyla Whitehead ended a 7-0 VCU run with a free throw, making it 20-16 Flyers.

  • A huge three pointer by graduate student Erin Whalen ended Dayton's field goal drought and put the Flyers back up six.

  • Sophomore Tenin Magassa anchored a strong Dayton back line, blocking two shots and altering several more.

  • The Flyers held the Rams to 23.5% shooting from the field in the quarter.

3rd Quarter: Dayton 39, VCU 40

  • For the third straight quarter, Cook led off the Dayton scoring, draining a three-pointer from the wing.

  • Whitehead added a nice layup in transition, giving her seven points and nine boards on the day.

  • A VCU four-point play cut the Dayton lead to four points at the 4:23 mark.

  • VCU went on a 13-2 run to take a three point lead.

  • A rebound and putback layup at the buzzer by Magassa cut the VCU lead to one at the end of the quarter.

4th Quarter: Dayton 58, VCU 60

  • A Magassa layup on an assist by graduate student Jenna Giacone put the Flyers back in the lead on their first possession of the half.

  • Magassa finished her eighth straight point for the Flyers, giving her a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. This is her second straight double-double and third on the season.

  • The Flyers regained their lead by dominating the paint, scoring four straight buckets in the key.

  • Graduate student Araion Bradshaw drained a pair of free throws, putting the Flyers up one.

  • Giacone hit a clutch corner three-pointer to bring the Flyers within one at the :14 mark.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

50- The Flyers dominated the boards, grabbing 50 rebounds to VCU's 35.

37%- The Flyers shot 37 percent, their second lowest total in A-10 play.

17- 17 turnovers was also the second most that Dayton has surrendered on the season.

12- There were 12 lead changes in this back and forth tilt.

7- All seven Flyers that played also scored at least one point.
