Women’s Basketball Stifles Rhode Island In Victory Wednesday

The Flyers Defeated The A-10 Leading Rams On The Road

Kingston, R.I.  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team went on the road in a hostile environment at Atlantic 10 leaders University of Rhode Island and earned a convincing 47-37 win.

The Flyers (20-4, 11-1 A-10) move back to the A-10 lead by half a game while the Rams (20-4, 10-1 A-10) meet UD again in the season finale.

KEY MOMENT
1st half – Dayton held URI to just 15 points in the first half and took a double-digit lead into the lockerroom.  

1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Rhode Island 8
  • It was a fast-paced start to the game for both teams, but nobody was able to convert on their opening possessions.
  • Dayton was the first to strike though with a layup from senior Kyla Whitehead at the 7:51 mark.
  • The host Rams answered though with five straight points amidst a 2+ minute scoring drought for the Flyers.
  • Graduate student Araion Bradshaw hit a three midway through the quarter to end the skid and tie the game up at 5-5.
  • Sophomore Makira Cook followed with three straight baskets out of the media break including a three to put UD up 12-8.
  • The Flyers held the Rams to a four-minute scoring drought to end the quarter while they went on a 7-0 run.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, Rhode Island 15
  • The Flyers and Rams traded baskets to start the second as the intensity carried over from the opening quarter.
  • Junior Mariah Perez gave some valuable minutes off the bench and gave a pair of nice moves and jumpers in the paint to put UD up 22-11 midway through the second.
  • A three by graduate student Jenna Giacone forced a URI timeout with 4:05 to play and Dayton up 25-11. The Flyers had another 7-0 run while the Rams had a 2:38 drought.
  • It was then Dayton's turn to go cold from the field as URI narrowed the gap to just 10.
  • The 15 points the Rams scored was their lowest total for a half this season.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 37, Rhode Island 30
  • The defenses stepped to start the second half and every shot was contested in the opening three minutes.
  • With a media timeout at the 7:04 mark, the Flyers held a 32-17 lead and a 2:19 drought for the Rams.
  • The back-and-forth on both ends of the floor continued to the midway point where the Flyers stayed up, 34-21.
  • A three by URI at the 2:57 mark closed the gap to single digits.
  • Dayton was forced to call a timeout after a URI 7-0 run and 3:20 drought.
  • Bradshaw nailed a three at the buzzer to push the margin back to seven.
4th Quarter: Dayton 47, Rhode Island 37
  • The Rams got back within five in the opening two minutes.
  • Grad student Erin Whalen answered with a tough runner in the lane to end the Flyers skid.
  • At the media timeout, the score was 40-32 in Dayton's favor as URI was on an 0-for-7 drought.
  • The Flyers slowed down the tempo of the game to make every possession count over the final two minutes, leading by nine.
  • The Rams were forced to foul and it came down to Flyer free throws to clinch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
15 – Dayton held Rhode Island to just 15 points in the first half, the lowest total for a half for the Rams this season.   
37 – The 37 points allowed was also a season-low for the Rams and the fewest points allowed for Dayton this season.
10 – Grad students Araion Bradshaw and Jenna Giacone both scored a season-high 10 points.
8 and 9 – Senior Kyla Whitehead nearly had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
10 – Dayton had a season-high 10 blocks.

KEY STAT
37 – The Flyers held the top scoring margin team to a season-low both in the first half and for the game.
