Women's Basketball Finishes Up Road Stretch At Saint Joseph's

Tip-Off Is At 6 p.m. Wednesday Night In Philadelphia

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team finishes up the three-game road stretch at Saint Joseph's University Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton remains on the road with a 21-4 record overall and 12-1 Atlantic 10 mark, putting them atop the league standings. The Flyers are 9-1 away from home this season and riding a two-game winning streak.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She ranks second all-time in program history in career wins.

As a team this year, Dayton is averaging 66.8 points per game and holding opponents to 55.5 points each contest. The Flyers are shooting 40.5 percent overall, 34.3 percent from three point range, and 66.9 percent from the free throw line. UD is outrebounding opposing teams by a +7.1 mark and committing fewer turnovers.

Dayton is led by sophomore Makira Cook with 14.9 points per game while graduate students Erin Whalen and Jenna Giacone are adding 13.3 points and 12.8 points per game respectively. Senior Kyla Whitehead is the team's leading rebounder with 7.2 per game to go with 7.6 points each contest.

SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
Saint Joseph's hosts Dayton with a 10-15 record on the year and 6-7 A-10 mark. The Hawks are 5-6 at home this season, but are coming off a win over George Washington Sunday.

Head coach Cindy Griffin is in her 21st season at her alma mater and has guided the Hawks to 11 postseason appearances.

This season, Saint Joseph's is scoring 58.3 points each outing and giving up 60.0 points to opposing squads. The Hawks are shooting 39.9 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from behind the arc, and 71.5 percent from the charity stripe. SJU has a positive rebounding margin, but is committing more turnovers.

Leading the way for the Hawks is Kaliah Henderson, with 10.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, and Katie Jekot, with 10.1 points and 32 three on the season. Five-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Tayla Brugler is the team's leading rebounder at 5.5 per game to go with 9.8 points each contest.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned their second straight victory on the road with a 48-47 rollercoaster game at Fordham Saturday. The Flyers led by double digits at the half after holding the Rams to just 15 points, but were able to fend off a second-half rally.
Saint Joseph's earned a convincing 57-34 victory at home Sunday against George Washington. The Hawks held the Colonials to single digits in three of the quarters and got a team-high 21 points from Mackenzie Smith.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Saint Joseph's have played 33 times previously with the Flyers holding 20 wins to the Hawks' 13 wins. UD has won the last nine contests, including lasst year's game on Feb. 5 in Philadelphia, 55-43.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 14th in the country in defensive rebounds per game and 17th in total rebounds per game. The Flyers are also 19th in field goal percentage defense and 29th in turnovers per game. Individually, Araion Bradshaw is 14th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio while Tenin Magassa is 34th in blocked shots.

WHALEN EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Graduate student Erin Whalen was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight season for District 5. Finishing up her master's degree in communications, she has a GPA of 3.88.

OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 42-2 in her six seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in five of her first six seasons.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 645 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 184-22 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
