Women’s Basketball Earns Road Victory At Saint Louis

The Flyers Moved To 10-0 In A-10 Play

ST LOUIS, MO.  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team played a day game at Saint Louis University Wednesday and earned a 69-54 win over the Billikens.

The Flyers (19-3, 10-0 A-10) stay atop the Atlantic 10 standings while the Billikens (6-14, 2-6 A-10) continue to struggle.

KEY MOMENT
4th quarter –  Dayton held Saint Louis without a field goal for a stretch of nearly five minutes.

1st Quarter: Dayton 18, Saint Louis 15
  • Dayton went inside early as sophomore Tenin Magassa gave the visitors the early lead.
  • The Billikens were able to answer though and kept within striking distance of the Flyers.
  • Graduate student Erin Whalen drilled a three in transition at the 5:34 mark to put UD up 10-5.
  • SLU was able to close the gap to just two points by the media break, 12-10.
  • Dayton held a narrow three-point lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Turnovers were 5-1 in favor of the Flyers.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, Saint Louis 30
  • The Billikens opened the second with a basket as the Flyers were unable to score in the opening two minutes, committing three turnovers.
  • Senior Kyla Whitehead got a putback bucket to end the Flyer skid at the 7:09 mark.
  • A pull up jumper followed by a three from graduate student Jenna Giacone forced a SLU timeout with 5:33 to play. UD had its biggest lead of the game up to that point at six.
  • Saint Louis used a 6-0 run over 1:06 to tie the game up at 29-29.
  • The Flyers led by just one at the half.
  • SLU outrebounded UD 23-16 in the first 20 minutes with both teams shooting 41 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 50, Saint Louis 46
  • UD was the first to strike in the second half as Whitehead joined Giacone with nine points to lead Dayton.
  • By the media break, the Flyers were still up just one, 33-32.
  • The Billikens responded by going 4-of-5 and took a 38-35 lead over the Flyers midway through the quarter.
  • Giacone became the first Flyer in double-digits with 11 points.
  • UD answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead back 48-44 in the final minute.
4th Quarter: Dayton 69, Saint Louis 54
  • UD held strong to start the third quarter, maintaining the lead over the first three minutes.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, Dayton was up 56-49.
  • The Flyers held the Billikens without a field goal for over five minutes.
  • SLU called a timeout with 2:04 to play as UD had pushed the margin to 11, 63-52.
  • The Flyers hit key shots down the stretch and kept the Billikens out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
43% - Dayton shot 43 percent in the game while holding Saint Louis to 39 percent.
8% - The Flyers also limited the Billikens to 1-of-12 from three point range for 8 percent.
21 – Jenna Giacone had a game-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
11 and 11 – Tenin Magassa recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards.
14 – Dayton tied a season-high 14 steals, both in the last two outings.
