Women's Basketball Opens A-10 Quarterfinals Friday

Tip-Off Is At 11 a.m. at Chase Fieldhouse In Delaware

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will head to Wilmington, Del. as the No. 1 overall seed in the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship tournament. The Flyers will play in the A-10 Quarterfinals Friday at 11 a.m. against the winner of No. 8 seed Richmond and No. 9 seed Davidson.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton finished the regular season with a 23-4 record overall and won the A-10 title after going 14-1 in league play. The Flyers have won four straight and are 3-1 in neutral site games this season.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year this season, her third time at UD. She ranks second all-time in program history in career wins.

As a team this year, Dayton is averaging 66.3 points per game and holding opposing teams to 54.7 points each outing. The Flyers are shooting 40.4 percent overall, 34.2 percent from three point range, and 67.2 percent from the free throw line. UD also has +7.1 rebounding and +1.4 turnover margins.

Dayton is led by sophomore Makira Cook with 14.7 points per game while graduate student Erin Whalen is chipping in 13.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and fellow grad Jenna Giacone is adding 13.0 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton wrapped up the regular season with a 60-46 win over Rhode Island on Feb. 26, clinching the A-10 regular season title. Jenna Giacone had a team-high 21 points while the Flyers won their fourth straight game.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 11th in the country in field goal percentage defense and 12th in defensive rebounds per game. The Flyers also rank 17th in scoring defense and rebounds per game. Individually, Araion Bradshaw is 17th in the nation in assist to turnover ratio while Tenin Magassa is 33rd in blocks per game.

GREEN, COOK HONORED WITH A-10 AWARDS
Dayton head coach Shauna Green was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time this season while sophomore guard Makira Cook was named A-10 Most Improved Player, joining teammate Jenna Giacone who earned the accolade last season.

Cook picked up Second Team All-Conference honors while Giacone was named First Team All-Conference. Graduate student Erin Whalen earned Third Team All-Conference. Senior Kyla Whitehead and grad student Araion Bradshaw received All-Defensive Team accolades while Bradshaw joined Whalen on the All-Academic Team.

FLYERS WIN 2022 A-10 REGULAR SEASON TITLE
Dayton won the regular season finale at home against Rhode Island on Feb. 26, clinching the Atlantic 10 title for the fifth time in the past six seasons, including three straight championships. With that victory, graduate student Jenna Giacone and head coach Shauna Green have won their seventh trophy in their time at UD.

WHALEN EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Graduate student Erin Whalen was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight season for District 5. Finishing up her master's degree in communications, she has a GPA of 3.88.

GIACONE CHOSEN FOR WBCA SO YOU WANT TO BE A COACH PROGRAM
Graduate student Jenna Giacone was selected as a participant in this year's WBCA "So You Want To Be A Coach Program". As part of a two-day event held at the 2022 WBCA convention, Giacone will join fellow women's basketball players to learn the ins-and-outs of coaching, networking, and leadership.

OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 42-2 in her six seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in five of her first six seasons.

FLYERS FAVORITE IN PRESEASON POLL
Dayton was picked to as preseason favorites after winning the A-10 regular season in 2020-21. The Flyers received 11 first-place votes and were selected ahead of Rhode Island, Fordham, Saint Louis, and VCU.

PRESEASON HONORS
The Atlantic 10 released its preseason all-conference teams and recognized four Flyers ahead of the upcoming campaign. Grad student Jenna Giacone was named First Team while fellow grad student Erin Whalen was named Second Team. Sophomore center Tenin Magassa was named to the Third Team and grad student Araion Bradshaw picked up All-Defensive Team accolades.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 140 of its last 168 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.833), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

BRADSHAW NAMED A-10 WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
The Atlantic 10 Conference chose its NCAA Woman of the Year nominees and selected University of Dayton graduate student Araion Bradshaw as one of the two representatives. Bradshaw is the point guard with the women's basketball program and entering her fifth year at UD this fall. The Boston, Mass. native has helped lead the Flyers to four A-10 Championship titles. Bradshaw is a graduate student with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, master's in engineering management, and working on her master's in business management.

Off the court, she has been just as impactful. She started the Athletes Driving Change organization that is a group of minority A-10 women's basketball players focused on the mission to "promote permanent change toward equality through the voices of Atlantic 10 female athletes using a unified and inclusive platform." She earned the Social Justice Award at this year's R.U.D.Y.S. Banquet for her work on equality and education. Bradshaw is a passionate and vocal leader in the community and has represented the University with the upmost integrity.

FLYERS DOMINATE A-10 MAJOR HONORS LAST SEASON
The Atlantic 10 Conference released its end-of-the-season awards the week prior to the tournament and recognized three Flyers with major awards. Redshirt senior Jenna Giacone was named Most Improved Player as well as First Team All-Conference. Fellow senior Araion Bradshaw took home Defensive Player of the Year accolades as well as Third Team and All-Defensive team. Freshman center Tenin Magassa was named Sixth Woman of the Year and named to the All-Rookie Team. On top of that, redshirt senior Erin Whalen was named to the Second Team and All-Academic team, totaling nine awards for the Flyers.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 647 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 184-22 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
