Women's Tennis To Celebrate Senior Weekend On Saturday And Sunday

The Flyers Will Play Three Matches Against Western Kentucky And Eastern Michigan

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's tennis team will celebrate Senior Weekend with three matches across two days against Western Kentucky and Eastern Michigan. The Flyers will take on WKU in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:30 p.m. and will return for the final home match of the season on Sunday at 6 p.m. against Eastern Michigan. Both matches will take place at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg.

The program will celebrate senior Claire Ghidotti before the matches on Saturday with the celebration starting at 1 p.m. On Sunday, there will be a celebration for the Class of 2020, who because of the 2020 season being canceled due to COVID-19 did not get a Senior Day of their own. That celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Dayton is 9-8 this season after two wins over the weekend against St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. Freshman Neena Katauskas won her second-straight A-10 Rookie of the Week award after a 4-0 weekend against two conference opponents. Katauskas went 2-0 in No. 3 singles play and paired with sophomore Sarah DeMarco for two wins during doubles play. DeMarco also enjoyed an undefeated weekend playing in Pittsburgh.

Katauskas also leads the team with 12 season wins and has won four straight dual singles matches. Junior Erica Wojcikiewicz has seven singles wins this season and 21 in her career which is tied for 25th in the history of the program. Junior Elizabeth Hamilton and freshman Laura Greb are the other two Flyers with at least 10 wins in 2021-22.

Wojcikiewicz also leads the team with 11 wins in doubles play, while Hamilton picked up her 20th career doubles victory over the weekend, which is the most of any active Flyers and puts her tied for 24th all-time.

Western Kentucky enters the weekend at 13-8 on the season after falling twice last weekend at Butler and against Illinois-Chicago. Cora-Lynn von Dungern has played most of the season at No. 1 singles for the Lady Toppers, posting a 5-10 record in 15 decisions this season. Rachel Hermanova leads the team with 16 wins during singles play including a 7-0 record in No. 5 singles, and Laura Bernardos has 10 wins in the second singles flight for WKU.

Eastern Michigan is 11-11 this season after two wins on Sunday against Bowling Green and Lourdes. Luisa Pelayo has been the main factor in No. 1 singles, going 6-11 for the Eagles and 10 wins overall. Sabina Brichackova leads the team with 17 wins this season with nine of those victories coming in the fourth singles flight. Prerna Vichare has come on strong in doubles play for EMU, with a 21-5 record in doubles matches.

The Flyers are 0-2 all-time against Western Kentucky with both matches coming since 2019. Dayton fell 6-1 against the Lady Toppers on April 17, 2021 at Graul Tennis Complex on Dayton's campus. Hamilton got the lone point, defeating Lauren Joch in No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2 a year ago.

Dayton is also 1-3 against Eastern Michigan, dropping a close contest last February 4-3 at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg. The Flyers got singles victories from junior Paige Kompa, Kelly Pleiman, and senior Claire Ghidotti in the loss.
