Women's Soccer Earns First Victory of the Season Sunday

Flyers Best Wright State in Front of Nearly 500 Fans

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's soccer team closed out it's season-opening two-match homestand Sunday evening, as they hosted the cross-town Wright State Raiders. In a match delayed just over 90 minutes due to severe weather, the Flyers earned their first victory of the season in front of a packed house at Baujan Field, besting the Raiders 2-0.
Ā
Just as they did in the opening match of the season on Thursday, the Flyers hit the ground running to start the match, as reigning Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year Itala Gemelli netted her first goal of the season in the seventh minute of the match. The junior was set up beautifully for the goal by fellow upperclassmen Jessica Sheldon, as Sheldon drove down the wing and delivered a perfect cut-back pass to the left foot of the streaking Gemelli, who tapped it home past starting goalkeeper Jessika Seward.
Ā
The Flyers posted an impressive seven shots on goal in just the first half of the match Sunday, and they would get an insurance goal as a ball put into the box in the 43rd minute by Alicia Donley deflected off a Raiders defender and ended up in the back of the net, credited as an own goal to give Dayton a 2-0 lead.
Ā
Maddie Crosbie started the match for the Flyers in net, and would make three saves in her 45 minutes of action. Freshman Batoul Reda took over the goalkeeping duties in the second stanza, and would also make three saves in her collegiate debut en-route to a team shutout for the Flyers. Dayton dominated the majority of possession throughout the match, and would out-shoot the Raiders 27-7 when all was said and done.
Ā
The Flyers will hit the road for the first time in the regular season this week, as they travel down I-75 for a meeting with the Northern Kentucky Norse on Thursday evening in Highland Heights, Ky. The 7:00 p.m. kick-off can be seen live on ESPN+, and live stats will also be available on DaytonFlyers.com. Dayton will return home after that short trip for a Sunday matinee at Baujan Field against the Kent State Golden Flashes. Kick-off from Baujan Field will be at 1:00 p.m.
