DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team continues Atlantic 10 play at the University of Rhode Island Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at URI Soccer Complex.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters the weekend after a six-day break, sitting at 5-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the A-10. The Flyers have not lost a contest since Nov. 6 of last year, but look to get their first conference win this season and move to 2-0 in road contests.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 18th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 3.50 goals per game and holding opponents to just 0.67 goals each outing, the second-best goal differential in the nation. UD is also first in the country in shots per game.
UD is led by seniors
Forster Ajago and
Andy Sanchez, who both have four goals and two assists each. Sophomore
Michael Adedokun is tied for eighth in the country with a team-high five assists.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island also remains unbeaten this season with a 4-0-4 record overall and has a similar 0-0-1 A-10 mark. The Rams are coming off a win Tuesday and are 2-0-1 at home this year.
Head coach Gareth Elliott is in his ninth season at URI and has two A-10 Coach of the Year honors at his alma mater.
Overall, the Rams are averaging 2.13 goals per game and holding opponents to 1.25 goals per outing. URI is out-shooting opposing squads 13.8 to 9.0 each game, but at a lower on-goal percentage.
Rhode Island is led by Rafa Villanueva, who has team-highs of four goals and eight points. Patrick Agyemang and Kevin Castaneda have chipped in seven points each, combining for five goals. Goalkeeper Max Hinke has 29 saves and two shutouts in eight starts.
LAST OUTING
Dayton opened A-10 play with a 1-1 draw at home last Saturday against Saint Joseph's. The Flyers took the initial lead in the 39th minute, but the Hawks got the equalizer in the 54th minute.
Rhode Island picked up a 5-3 win over Albany Tuesday at home. The Rams struck in the fourth minute with an own goal and added three goals in the second half to earn the win.
SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Rhode Island are meeting for the 27th time in series history with the Flyers holding a 14-12 win advantage. The Rams came out on top last season, 1-0, at Dayton.
ATTACK MINDED
The Flyers are one of the most dangerous offenses in the country as they lead the nation in shots per game, shots on goal per game, and rank second in goal differential. UD is also Top 10 in assists, goals, and points.
FLYERS RANKED 24TH IN USC POLL
In the latest United Soccer Coaches national rankings, Dayton moved down to 24th in the country after being No. 17 last week. That was the highest ranking ever for the Flyers and fourth season in which they have been in the Top 25 (19th in 2013, 21st in 2009, 22nd in 2008).
FOUR FLYERS EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS
Dayton had four players named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team with seniors
Xavier Zengue,
Andy Sanchez, and
Manny Day receiving accolades while freshman
Casper Svendby was named to the team as well.
CURRIER AMONG ALL-TIME BEST
Dayton head coach
Dennis Currier ranks in the Top 15 all-time in career victories . Among active coaches, he is Top 20 in winning percentage and 11th in career wins.
INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
Dayton historically has had a diverse team with players hailing from all over the globe. This season is no different with the Flyers having student-athletes from 10 different countries.
