Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short At Saint Louis

The Flyers Played Their Second National TV Game Of The Season Sunday

ST. LOUIS – The University of Dayton women's basketball team battled Saint Louis University Sunday in a fast-paced showdown on CBS Sports, but were unable to earn the win on the road.

The Flyers (3-13, 2-3 A-10) drop their third Atlantic 10 contest while the Billikens (5-14, 2-3) earn their second conference victory.

4th quarter – Final 4:00 – Saint Louis rode a 10-0 run down the stretch to pull away from Dayton.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Saint Louis 7
  • The Billikens jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the contest.
  • The Flyers didn't get their first points until the 6:43 mark with a layup by senior Mariah Perez off the assist from fellow senior Sydney Freeman.
  • Perez added another tough bucket to tie the game up at 4-4 before a Freeman drive gave UD its first lead of the game midway through the quarter.
  • Dayton held SLU without a point for four-plus minutes, forcing five turnovers.
  • The Flyers shot 36 percent in the first quarter while holding the Billikens to 20 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 27, Saint Louis 24
  • The first quarter ended and the second quarter began the same way, with free throws from freshman Nayo Lear as Dayton extended its lead to 14-9.
  • Fouls started to pile up for SLU as they had three starters with two or more fouls before the midway point in the second.
  • On top of the free throws, Dayton had a 3-for-3 stretch from the field.
  • The Flyers continued to lead, but a 6-0 run over the final 2:13 by the Billikens made it a three-point game at the half.
  • UD shot 38 percent from three while SLU shot 14 percent from behind the arc.
  • Redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon had a team-high seven points while Perez had five rebounds and four points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 49, Saint Louis 50
  • The Billikens' leading scorer did not get her first points in the contest until the start of the second half, but the Flyers' leading scorer Bohanon answered with a three.
  • SLU managed to take the lead back with a three at the 8:28 mark, capping a 7-0 run over :42.
  • The pace early on in the second fast was up-tempo for both teams.
  • A pull-up jumper by Bohanon tied the game up at 37-37 right before the media break.
  • An and-one play by Perez with 2:22 to play gave Dayton a 45-44 lead.
  • The two teams combined for 48 points in the third quarter alone.
4th Quarter: Dayton 69, Saint Louis 80
  • The pace of the third carried over into the fourth to start with both teams scoring in the opening two minutes in a variety of ways.
  • A Freeman three with 8:14 to play put Dayton up three and gave her double digits for the game.
  • SLU called the first timeout of the game at the 6:30 mark with the Flyers ahead by three, 60-57.
  • At the media break, Dayton faced a 65-63 deficit while SLU was 5-for-7 during the stretch.
  • SLU answered with an 8-0 run to pull ahead by six and under three minutes to play.
  • In the end, the Billikens got hot at the right time while the Flyers went cold down the stretch.
