Women’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker At St. Bonaventure

The Flyers Led Late, But The Bonnies Hit The Game Winner With :05 To Play

OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team battled to the very end, but came up just short in a 54-53 loss on the road at St. Bonaventure Thursday.

The Flyers (3-14, 2-4 A-10) suffered their second-straight loss while the Bonnies (4-17, 1-5 A-10) earn their first Atlantic 10 win of the season.

4th quarter - :05 – St. Bonaventure drilled a long, contested two to take the final lead of the game.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 11, St. Bonaventure 18
  • St. Bonaventure struck first with a three at the 8:29 mark to open the scoring.
  • The Flyers did not get their first points until redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon hit a contest jumper and drew the foul with 6:13 to play.
  • By the first media timeout, Dayton faced an 11-6 deficit.
  • Bohanon had three of the Flyers' first four field goals.
  • The Bonnies hit a three in the final seconds to take a seven-point lead, their biggest of the game.
  • All of Dayton's field goals came in the paint in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 25, St. Bonaventure 27
  • The Flyers got a layup from freshman Nayo Lear on the opening possession for Dayton, but St. Bonaventure answered with an and-one play.
  • UD attempted to close the gap, but the Bonnies were not budging and kept firing shots freely.
  • Midway through the second, the score was 23-20 in favor of the hosts.
  • The Flyers had a 21-11 rebounding advantage and scored 14 of their first 20 points in the paint.
  • At the :33 mark, Dayton tied the game up with a layup from senior Mariah Perez.
  • Bohanon had a team-high eight points in the first half while junior Anyssa Jones and Lear each had six rebounds apiece.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 44, St. Bonaventure 37
  • UD took the lead with a three from senior Sydney Freeman on the first possession of the second half. Perez followed up with a long jumper to add to the Flyers' advantage.
  • Dayton pushed the tempo in the early stages and took control of the pace in its favor.
  • The first four baskets in the third came from a different Flyer.
  • The game slowed down out of the media timeout, but UD slowly extended its lead to seven at 39-32, forcing a SBU timeout with 2:34 to go in the third.
  • Freeman became the first Flyer in double-digits with 12 points on three threes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 53, St. Bonaventure 54
  • The Bonnies came out attacking in the fourth, attempting to climb back into the game.
  • UD did not score its first point of the quarter until the 7:31 mark with a layup from Perez.
  • Back-to-back threes from St. Bonaventure pulled the Bonnies within one, but Freeman hit her fourth three of the game to answer.
  • SBU tied the game up with 2:42 to play at 51-51, forcing Dayton to use its first timeout of the game.
  • The Bonnies hit a free throw to lead with under a minute to go in the game.
  • Perez hit a jumper with 16 seconds to play to put Dayton up one, 53-52.
  • St. Bonaventure answered with a long two at the :05 mark to take a 54-53 lead.
  • Dayton was unable to convert their chance and came up short.

6-of-8 - St. Bonaventure was 6-of-8 from the field in the fourth quarter while Dayton was 4-of-14.

UP NEXT
The Flyers return home to host Massachusetts Sunday, Jan. 22 at 12 p.m. ET on ESPNU. It is the third nationally televised game for Dayton in as many weeks.
