Women’s Basketball Suffers Loss in Tough Game Against UMass

The Flyers Were Overpowered By The Minutewomen In The Second Half

DAYTON – The University of Dayton Women's basketball team suffered a 79-60 loss at home to Massachusetts on Sunday.
 
The Flyers (3-15, 2-5 A-10) dropped their third straight while UMass (14-4, 4-1 A-10) won their fourth straight.

2nd Quarter- 08:24- Sydney Taylor hits a three to spark a run for UMass, allowing them to pull away for good.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, UMass 18
  • UMass comes out on fire, scoring seven points unanswered. 
  • Senior Mariah Perez opens up the scoring for the Flyers, knocking down a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to 7-2.
  • Sophomore Arianna Smith hits a layup after grabbing an impressive rebound before Perez draws a charge on the other end, giving the Flyers some momentum.
  • Senior Sydney Freeman cuts the deficit to 10-7 with a huge three before Perez makes a layup, giving Dayton a 7-0 run and making the score 10-9. 
  • After a slow start, the Flyers close out the period hot, hitting four of their last five field goals and trail 13-18 at the end of the quarter.
  • Perez leads the way with six points while Smith has grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 22, UMass 39
  • Junior Destiny Bohanon opens up second-quarter scoring for Dayton, hitting a midrange jumper for her first points of the game.
  • UMass has started the second quarter well, jumping out to a 30-19 lead. 
  • Mariah Perez finds herself in double-digits early with a putback layup for her tenth point of the game.
  • The Flyers close out the half on a 3:56 scoring drought trailing 39-22 at the break. 
  • Perez leads the way in scoring with 10 points while Smith has a team-high in both rebounds and assists with five and three respectively.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 40, UMass 65
  • Freeman opens up the second half scoring for the Flyers, hitting a three.
  • UMass has made six of their last seven field goals to extend their lead to 53-31.
  • Freeman cracks into double digits with a nice driving layup, giving her 11 on the day.
  • Bohanon gets to 11 points after making a layup off Smith's assist. She is the third Flyer with double-digit scoring.
  • At the end of period 3, Sydney Freeman is leading Dayton on offense with 13 points while Arianna Smith is still making a significant contribution leading the team with six rebounds and four assists.
4th Quarter: Dayton 60, UMass 79
  • UMass opens the period with seven unanswered points increasing their lead to 40-72.
  • Junior Taisiya Kozlova hits a three to get her first points of the game before Dayton forces a stop on the defensive end.
  • Freshman Eleanor Monyek hits a mid-range jumper to score the first points of her collegiate career. She follows it up by drawing a foul on the next possession and making both free throws.
  • The Flyers have gone on a 12-2 run over the last 3:46.

32- Dayton grabbed 32 rebounds as a team.
15- Mariah Perez led the Flyers in scoring with 15 points.
